Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Good bidding war here: 876899944. $850 against catalogue $150, though G28a as catalogued is an encased US cent rather than a farthing.

Dunno - it could conceivably be a cracked flan, i.e. a fault in the blank that has split at the edge when the coin was struck. Or a hacksaw job.

Looks very similar markings to what happens to my pen when I get into a bidding war.

It looks the same as a number of $1 coin errors I have found and a number of them have come from mint $1000 bags. I suspect they get jammed while being minted I cant seem to find the box with them in right now but I have photos of some similar errors on the bottom of this page http://wp.me/P4A88C-17

I have no doubt it is genuine error at the mint. it is still odd as to how they are caused at the mint as I have multiple years with very similar errors from royal mint sealed bags.

should i list under coins or as reproductions, etc
perhaps martin has the answer?

I would argue that they aren't reproductions, since they aren't forgeries or copies of anything. Likewise the 1937 Edward VIII fantasies - I'd suggest the Exonumia category for anything that qualifies for the "Unusual World Coins" catalogue. Happy to argue the toss with TM if anyone feels such items have been moved to Reproductions incorrectly.

does NZ post have to compensate me the amount I paid for the coin, or the actual replacement cost (which would be considerably more, I'd say).

what does the law say?

More to the point, what do NZ Post's T's&C's say ?

Pretty blatant when the seller dodges all efforts to establish the weight of the "coin".

Thanks for getting this test for me Gammoner :-)

As to why someone would go to the effort to make copies of these I have no Idea

Results are
Sn (Tin) is the major component at just under 95% (actual 94.915% )
Cu (copper) 4.495%
Cd ( a trace at 0.517% ) and Bi (also a trace at 0.073% ) but these last
two could just be a ghost reading as such a small concentration

hmm ...

I purchased a couple of 2011 NZ silver one dollars from a German seller on the ebay. Good price they were. But curiously he/she included a bag of these in with my coins
