I believe the bidding is genuine, but I think the notes are fake.

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Another two rolls purchased from central shop and uni post shop: one R/R (reverse/reverse) and one O/R. South D says they will only exchange to COINS per day and no rolls. Way to create a false sense of demand, NZ Post!

Anyway, I think three very minor die cracks from the bottom of the effigy halfway to rim, three with the black noticeably off-center and one with a very light die crack from one of the Roman numerals to the fold under the queen's chin.

So I was in the post shop to post a parcel, so might as well get me a few rolls of them Anzac coins, I thought to myself. Limit of two per customer, said the lady at the counter. Okay then, I'll take two rolls then, said I. We don't sell the rolls, she said, The limit is two COINS per customer!! But but ... but what about all those maggots who bought 50 rolls, and are now selling them on at an obscene profit, I muttered ... in anger, and disbelief? That's the spirit, eh? Bloody chiselers!!!!

At the risk of alienating my dealer colleagues I think any future "circulating commemorative" issues should be just that: released over the counter in change at post offices and banks, not sold in bulk, or at least with a strict limitation on bulk sales, leaving the majority to enter the market normally. Of course most will disappear into collections but the fun will be in the search through change to find them.

they only let me have 1/10th of a roll at the Devonport PostShop. Took the two coins I bought to give me straight from the change draw in the till where they were stored, with the rest of the change. Maybe I'll go check if they also have new stock. I want to buy 20 rolls!

The limit is 2 rolls per person per store, although most will only sell you 1 roll.

Scrap Metal. Should this be a new category given the numerous lots that are just a 'hunk of junk'. Some of the latest listings in the ancient and united kingdom are just a waste of space that we should not have to wade through to find decent coins.

Purchased at the last Noble auction (as fakes) a lot of NZ replicas not the best quality and have not been trimmed yet but wondered if gammoner had some photos of the coin he tested for a trademe member last year.

I didn't take any photos but the halfcrown ( the previous owner certainly did before it was sold on TM ), coin I tested had the reeded edge, does your one?
Have you an approximate weight as it is now?

I tried to look back at the photos on the forum but they have sadly all gone now. Yes the coins have a reeded edge and the 4 1933 Halfcrowns weigh 10.842, 10.979, 11.155, 13.140 (larger weight for one in the photo)

I can remember it was 12.86gm .
Will go back through the emails as am sure Ross sent pics to me at the beginning.

Did that one turn out to be fake? If so, what was the actual metal content?

Yea It does scratch a little with fingernails. Could I send one to you to look at with a return envelope as I would be interested to know if it is similar to the other one you have looked at.

I will not be selling them just purchased them to see what they were like and to show others what fakes are out there.

echoriath wrote:

The spectrometer showed the surface composition as
Cu, Copper at 3.155%
Zn Zinc at 0.875%
Ag Silver at 95.514%
Pd Palladium at 0.428%
Cd Cadmium at 0.164%

The base metal under was a composition of Manganese/Aluminium and without destroying it by melting it all together to get an accurate overall reading like you do in refining, we decided to leave it at that.
It was definitely die struck and not a cast copy though.

Yes of course, and if these have not had the silver applied yet, then an accurate reading of its composition would be possible

ah, I see them now, electrotype copies. Seems like a lot of effort to go to just to produce obvious fakes. They are pretty obvious, aren't they?

dtpapa - 2015-04-25 10:19:00

Yes you can tell they are fakes but hopefully we do not see more turning up as in a bulk lot they could be rather annoying to find. I also dont understand why they would try to copy them like this for very little gain.

Keep an eye out for a commemorative 50 cent piece with an indentation/line that runs from above the queen's temple to the middle of her cheek. I have found three or four out of 50 or so that have this, and another with a partial line just in the temple area. I don't know exactly how it formed, but it appears identical on the ones that have it.

In addition to the die crack that runs straight from the base of the effigy straight down to the rim (and a lot more where it only runs part way to the rim), there's also a die crack that runs back at approximately 45 degrees to the left and runs to the rim.

Photos to follow as time allows.
