THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
6001

So this is what 6000 looks like!?!

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

(We need a fireworks emoticon)

The silver bit in the middle of the two soldiers, wondering if the colour has just come off?

I see it now - either that or an application flaw. It's all new technology and I have no idea either how it's applied or how permanent it is. Hopefully some will actually see some circulation so we can see how the colour component performs over time ...

I opened my first roll tonight. The numbers run something like this:

Eight out of 20 had some discernible oddity, mostly in the form of the colouring being off-center to the point that it ran onto the hands/guns/hats. Actually, on two or three the left-hand figure has black face. More were off a bit, but not to the point where much of the unintended bits had colour. One of the eight had the coulour shifted significantly downward as well as to the right. Two had the colour shifted to the left. The remaining five it was shifted to the right (including the ones with black face).

I think two of the eight had marginal starts of die cracks from the bottom of the effigy, but only halfway to the rim. One of those two also had a wee dimple right in the base of the effigy right at the top of the die crack. A third had a crack right to the rim from the bottom of the effigy.

Also, of the six rolls, three had reverse/reverse, two had obverse/reverse, and one was obverse/obverse. On one of the reverse ones, the hat of the soldier on the left shows a rather weakly struck button that holds the brim of the hat to the point there's almost nothing there. Of the roll I opened, maybe one had a similarly weak strike.

@ Murray: I have a feeling David's English is better than my French. Ah, damnable prepositions.....

Very interesting information, and it does go to Lois' point that there will be substantial interest for the coin globally, so maybe I will be proved wrong about its value long term. After all, one million in a country of four million....

Time will tell.

Yes, but my Spanish sucks completely. I think my French is perhaps comparable to his English. I make myself understood easily. I just always worry about my prepositions. I also have great respect for people who give any additional language a crack: well done, David. Hope you will be able to join us in person at some point.

Picking up a second wife? Don't think so. Trying to learn a new language after 50 is quite enough work.

The important thing is to make sure (a) it won't move or rattle and (b) it can't be felt through the envelope (and (c) that you don't put sellotape on the coin itself!). I tend to pop a single coin in the corner of an old envelope, fold it so the coin won't move, then put that in between two pieces of fairly stiff cardboard, which I then tape together. That goes in the envelope that you post.

If they are real they are worth a lot, but there are more fakes than real ones.

And when you take into account the seller and the amount of fake medals, coins he has sold it would be hard to think they are real

So what is the take on these auctions?
The two serious bidders had Asian sounding names under their profile so is there something about some of these notes that we are not aware off?
I know Chinese bank notes have been achieving very high prices on the international market, some greater than the prices those Trade Me auctions achieved and although I doubt it there may be some genuine interest with the bids.
Hard to see though.

Those Chinese notes are the 1st issue by the People's Bank of China (communist China) around 1948-1950. There are a lot of denominations and designs, worth roughly between nz$500 - 300000 IF THEY ARE REAL.
