Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

All too true, the absence of action on many fronts in NZ is essentially corruption. One decade this month from the Cave Creek disaster. How many other people have died as a sacrifice on the alter of self-regulation ? People being ripped off seems to becoming normal business practice and fake coins are just small bikkies compared to other things.

Saw a good business opportunity at the Broadbeach seaside market on Sunday for those with plenty of old pennies and the odd farthing.
"Pennyfarthings has The perfect birthday gift for the over 40s. Any year to 1967." This Derek gets cheap small pictures frames, draws different very basic pictures and glues the obverse of an Aussie penny onto the picture and the mug buys one that has a his/her birth year on the coin. The dearer ones were pennyfarthing (two coins) pictures at up to $35 each. I declined the offer to buy one.

Watch the video on the rbnz website on how they are made they take a fair beating. Not unlike all our nz coins they all have alot of bag marks I find the $1 made in the uk are worse than the 10-50c made in Canada

Anyone taken note of the campaign to change the face on a U$20 to a significant female historical figure? I'd love to see the change, though I noticed that the original letter mentioned wanting women on coins/notes. Sadly, nowhere in any of the discussion I have seen has anyone pointed out that there ARE women on US coins!

I checked over 100 yesterday- looking for a flaw- not one that i would consider perfect- and probally only a few that would grade as unc,,but i think the quality control is pretty good taking photos of them in the minting process etc, as i could not find any cuds etc

good point on the term i used of bag marks this would only explains why the $1 and $2 coins are even harder to find true unc as they still get supplied to the reserve bank in $1,000 bags.

I am still waiting on my nzpost order turning up and the local post shops that do have rolls left will not sell them to anyone but are breaking them up to give out as change. Out of the ones I have searched I did find a few cuds etc only taken photos of 3 different ones at the moment can be seen at the bottom of this page http://wp.me/P4A88C-41

Bear in mind that "bag marks" is shorthand for "production damage not inflicted through actual circulation", though, so it isn't restricted to what happens in the bag during transportation. Clinking together on the conveyor and pouring into the bags, etc., also counts. It would be great to see it not happen, but the demands of mass production take precedence over the interests of us quality fanatics :-(

Good point.

Has anyone purchased the pack for $9.90? Interested to see if these show the same amount of wear on them or were put aside during production.

I guess what's her name on the Morgan or the various other models on the SLQ and all those draped busts don't count but I agree Susan B Anthony is pretty significant and somewhat ironic that they overlook it and Sacajawea too.

I thought they only had dead people depicted on their banknotes?!!!!!! Or what are you trying to imply LOL. What about Marilyn Monroe, or

Yes, the US has to tread lightly even with a woman long gone going on the $20. I support the move, but I fear the moment one note gets a new face, a bunch of people there will decide it's Reagan's time to go on another note. They've been trying to put him on the dime for years. I'm surprised DC has not been renamed Reaganville already.

Actually, if they want the dollar coins to catch on, the vaunted dollar bill needs to be retired. I think that will never happen for two main reasons:

1. The symbolic value is too great and

2. Dollar coins don't stay in the g-strings of strippers very well. [Insert pun about putting coins in a slot here.]

(Sorry, I may have stated these here some time ago, but I think they bear repeating.)

Agreed, Don. I fear for the future of the hobby. We've lobbied TM and met with their Trust & Safety people but there's not a lot we can do. If something's described accurately as a replica or whatever, it's not actually breaching any terms and conditions so we're stuck. The flood of forgeries out of China is only going to get worse (and better quality), too.

It's in Australia as well.Just before Easter saw the beautiful & common Eritrean Tallero fake, Colonial Spanish-American 8 Reales (not so good), denarii and even two identical Venetian hammered coins (amazing!). I did get a few Byzantine and Ptolemaic copper coins that had been OKed by Peter Lewis.
Remember that many members of the NZ Numismatic Dealers Assn. have sold copies on Trademe.

It's certainly sufficient to induce extreme caution when looking at buying coins or indeed (in my case) altogether halt buying.

I have ordered 2 off these rolls of coins from NZ Post about a month ago but they haven't been dispatched yet. Does anyone know if there are delays in them being couriered out?

Very disappointed to see the PO has cancelled the Cricket World Cup issue due to an "unforeseen production issue". One would think an organisation with the status of the NZPO would have made sure they were going to get the goods before advertising them. Perhaps they reserved the lot for World Cup officials and they may yet turn up on Trade Me at an inflated price. Cheers, taidhg

I ordered two just a couple of days ago. Perhaps they are getting low on stock, due to all of the miserable ratbags who have purchased 1000s of them to sell off at an obscene price!

People are reading only half of what's in the latest catalogue :-) Guide price for 1 is $15, but for a roll $75. Anyone multiplying the first figure up is conveniently ignoring the second.

Rest assured there were no miserable ratbags ordering 1000s of them as there were only 500 to start with.

This whole limiting sales by NZ Post to one roll of the ANZAC commemorative coins per person per day seems quite silly. It's only going to limit supply, thereby creating an artificial increase in demand, further driving up prices.

It was quite funny, actually: one postie got her back up when I cheekily said "Whatever price the market will bear". But they're the ones driving the price up. Well, them and people who don't know you can just get the coins at the post shop.

So I have two rolls with the reverse showing either end, and one with the obverse showing either end. Any clear stats on these, or is it just quite random?

Thanks, mudeki, for photos of errors. Good to have some idea of what's out there. Is it just me, or does it look like the soldiers are wearing blindfolds?

So now to start opening up rolls.....
