Don't forget the value of the odd "meatless" meal Although the price of cheese is horrendous, just keep in mind its cost versus other protein options. If I make my family macaroni cheese I use no more than 200gms for the protein part of the meal. On special at the moment that would cost $2.00 (or even at the expensive price of $14 a kg - $2.80) Try even buying the cheapest meat cuts to feed 4 adults for that. Just something to remember. (PS I also add bacon to mine but buy the cheap medallion Bacon when on special so maybe that adds another $2 - still a cheap meal) PPS I also tried the budget macaroni pasta as it was on special for 90c... it wasn't bad either. Macaroni cheese seems to be the meatless option that families love.. now if I was to serve up a lentil casserole, hammer swinging builder hubby would pack up his bag and leave home I think....

i agree heartidly my pizza feeds the 3-4 of us with leftovers for the lnches and pretty much vegetarian apsrt from bacon but that is optional...3 cups of flour, 3t baking powder, 3/4 cup of milk, 3/4 cup of oil mix and form a ball roll out to the desired shapa and fill, spaggetti, tomato pineapple, mushrooms, onions, and of course bacon and cheeese sprinkle with oregano and bake for 40 min, reckon all up $7-8 less if bacon is left off

Another one from me..... Is teach your children financial responsibility. My 2 girls want to go on an Outdoor pursuits/Leadership camp. The cost is $500 each of which the youthgroup are subsidising half... I said they could go but THEY had to fundraise the other half. I did this up front and they so desperately wanted to go that they agreed and happy to fundraise. They both have a bike each that they have outgrown so they will be listed soon and they have organised some Cadbury Caramello & Jelly Snakes Fundraisers as well. They will take these to school and some are listed on here. I think its a great opportunity for them to learn if they want something bad enough they have to work for it. It would have sent completely the wrong message to say "Sure how, much honeybuns" when they know we are saving so hard for our big trip.

Another one from me..... Paninis can be about $5 for 4, we now use hamburger buns and the results are not that much different. The girls and I have 1 & 1/2 each and hubby has 2. You can buy signature range hamburger buns for about $1.50 much cheaper, just make sure you set your sandwich press so it doesnt squash the beegesus out of them. Our favourite is pesto, red onion, cheese & chicken... yummmooo. And we have it with homemade vege soup. What we call a "lappy" as we eat this meal in front of the TV... very uncouth I know!

One of the things I have found with using Kobs recipe is that when clothes are being washed, hair doesn't cling to the clothing. I have 4 cats, two dogs and two of us with long hair and I thought our clothing would always come out of the machine hairy but after using Kobs recipe, I have realised that ordinary soap powder has a stickiness to it, that Kobs one doesn't.

Soap and scourers after staring at the last of my recycled knitted nylon scourers which I only ever found the once, I decided to try making them. The nylon stringy bag the onions came in was folded over and sewed with wax thread and works a treat. And I used another to hang round the tap and put the soap in rather than buy a hanger. Holes let the soap out into water, and while hanging soap dries nicely.

hi all! have noticed that it is still cheaper to bake your own bickies. last sat used 1 and a half pounds of butter and filled 7 good sized tins - about 9 doz bickies! i use the basic recipe of: 250gm butter to 1 cup of brown and 1 cup of white sugar with a tsp of vanilla essence. cream really well, then add 2 tsp of baking soda and 2 eggs, and a tsp of flour. beat well and then add enough flour till not sitcky - about 2 - 3 cups and i chuck in at that stage either bran, choc chips, rasins etc for a variety or just leave for hokey pokey type bickie. roll, flatten a little with a fork, bake at 150 deg till golden - real nice and not expensive to make - goes a long way. enjoy all and have a blessed day!

Kob re laundry liquid...... Hi Kob. Have been using your laundry liquid for a while now and really like it. I'm having trouble getting the washing soda and soap flakes to dissolve completely - there tends to be a layer that sits on top (even with mixing it with boiling water. It makes the whole lot pretty glupy - is this just the way it is or am I doing something wrong? Thanks Emma

ems4 - 2008-07-02 13:56:00
569

ems4 I have found that if you leave a gap at the top of the bottle it gives you shaking room, I give mine a good shake(i make a months suply at a time)for the 2 days after i have made it and then a good shake for the bottle i am about to use, that is the tip for me.and the glugginess goes away, i guess it is just the two ingredients seperating

Ok here goes. 3/4 cup sugar (you could possibly get away with less), 2 cups hot water, 1 tsp powdered ascorbic acid (vitamin C0, 1 cup orange juice, about 5 cups water.
Dissolve sugar and hot water and ascorbic avcid together until sugar dissolives. Add orang juice nd fill with cold water. Can refrigerate for up to 3 days. Now I was told that ascorbic acid was the same as citric acid whic is what I have been using.

Great thread guys...although I have sore eyes from reading at all at once! I've been making the laundry detergant for ages but I use grated sunlight soap instead of lux flakes. It works just fine and is so so so cheap. I also don't add any fragrance anymore and have got really used to clothes not smelling! Now I really notice when someone else's clothes smell of commercial detergent, it seems so overpowering!

And I have to mention the power of lentils for budgeters! I add up to a cup of red lentils to most mince dishes, it adds fibre and bulks the meal without changing the flavour. I also make a mexican red lentil soup that is a favourite in our family, even Mr Carnivore requests it. Add a homemade loaf of bread and it's a gorgeous meal for next to no cost. I also make huge pots of vege soup, I costed the last one and it was $11.53 to feed 5-6 of us for 6 meals plus a couple of lunches for me. Go soup!

mchatchell do you use tinned or dried lentils?

wayneandjudith - 2008-07-05 16:35:00

Dried lentils...the red ones cook really quickly and don't need to be soaked first. I just chuck some into mince dishes and they all but disappear.

My savings today are Hoping tonights Chicken burgers are delish as I got a tray of 50 Leonard Chicken Patties for $15 at Pak'n'Save, works out at $1.50 per meal (Hubby has 2 burgers and us 3 girls have 1 each) unless they shrink down to nothing and then I will just put 2 patties in each burger and it will be $3, still pretty cheap.

Casserole sauce base This actually from chef Tony Astle. When you have that lovely juicy gravy left over from a casserole, strain it and freeze it and then you've got a started for your next casserole. Just keep the process going and each time it grows in flavour.

I would like a recipe for that as well as the dishwashing powder. I would imagine it would have washing soda in it but what else? I guess you could maybe use sunlight soap or something like that for dishwashing detergent but who knows. There must be a way.

Stockings as a scrubber Lol you could read that many ways but...........My sister told me the other day that you can use stockings a a scrubbing pad and most times don't have to put any kind of cleaner on them. And no haven't tried it myself. But worth a try, just putting this in before I forget, so I can remind myself next time I check out this thread. Love the thread, thank you to all for the tips.

washing liquid for dishes 1..... grate 1 bar of sunlight soap add 1 jug of boiling water to a your biggest clean saucepan add the grated soap, when dissolved slowly add more water until the mix looks right, normally 1 bar of sunlight soap will make about 10 litra(one bucket).......tip2 get yourself a little devise that you put tea leaves into to just make a 1 cup tea with leaves sort of like a strainer but with two sides and it fits in a coffee cup, ok with your sunlight soap just cut small pieces off it and secure in your tea strainer and when your doing you dishes just dabble this in and out of the water, youd never know the differense

I made up and used my washing liquid today I washed two loads of towels with it - wanted to test in warm water. Mine didn't go thick - perhaps because it was still warm when I used it? I only made up 2l, but will try again. Over the last few days I have looked through most of this thread, very good. I am wondering if there is a shampoo/conditioner recipe, perhaps something similar to the dishwashing/clothes washing liquid? I must admit I have used sunlight soap on my hair, but only when camping, when we washed in the river - about 20 years ago! It would be handy to have a conditioner to go with it ...

Budget is going well discovered that budget do a "SLIM" milk, always thought due to the colour of the bottle it was only full fat blue milk. My girlfreind had it at her place and she had seen on TV from a target type programme that it came from the same plant as a major brand so was the SAME milk, tasted good to me so will have to see what price it is at Pak n Save, I like the fact that it is 3 litre as well. Budget Brand Biscuits - Tried those last week, they were over $1 cheaper for a bag and soooo yummy, the anzacs were too yummy and I ate far too many, the choc fudge chips were nice also, smaller than the normal so you got more (great for kids) and so crunchy... our family are sold on them.
Every week I seem to try another "Budget" product half expecting to not like it but I haven't found one that I don't yet. (Can't bring myself to try the baked beans or spaghetti - they have to be watties!)

Cabbage.... With the price of fruit and vege I find that the humble cabbage can really stretch the $$$, I brought a large one for $1.49 and it can last our family a week, we have it coleslawed with bbq meat, this is a family favourite so they don't mind having it several times during the week. Then the other nights finely sliced and lightly cooked. I notice when I buy a cabbage I don't need much else. We often have coleslaw with tinned beetroot and "dry roasted" potatoes and some kind of Meat from the BBQ (we BBQ all year round) So thats my tip for the week...Cabbage. (Everybody probable knew about the "slim" budget milk but I had overlooked it for years!
