Ok Question,
1. "Would I Be better off splitting up this set and sell individually or one complete lot and what reserve should I start with?"

1/ I would potentially put the lower valued ones as a lot and any higher CV ones as individual lots

New Zealand Post do a poor job of Postmarking special Centenary of NZ Airmail pictorial postmark in Timaru this last week.

A nice pictorial postmark and what does Timaru Post office do? Uses an old ink pad and under-inks it so poorly that you can't often read the wording. So sad that so little care was taken after a special postmark was organised.

Nothing wrong with that :) loads easier to search a webpage than spend 5 hours in a book and still not find what you want :)

If it's a money issue, then make a site subscription only, not hard at all :)

According to Campbell Paterson the unhinged mint price is
$250 - $300.
Probably about a third of that for hinged mint.

Krazy, you could always list the free stuff as a $1 reserve auction and just not ask the person to pay. Alternatively, I will take them LOL.

Donaldo, its always amazing when an auction with a start bid of less than 50% of postage value gets no bids. I wonder if NZ post realises how much their stamps are nto worth, even for postage. Just entioning as I know we have discussed this before.

TM world is a funny place for value.....and the various perceptions of it, the timing of your auctions and whose looking in what catergories that week huh.....

depends if your criteria is maximum gain or quick clearence......there are epople like me who buy larger lots, add to their collection what I need and then hope to sell the left overs to cover the original purchase costs....sometimes make a profit from the original purchase, some times take a large hit.

I have sold some larger lots and some individual stamps, you just need to be planned and patient if you want to sell individuals and remember the 50 cent minimum success fee on every sale type issue. Sometimes I have foudn paying the $3.95 feature works, othertimescomplete waste of money.......I did make the mistake of doing 100 auctions that all had the same closing date, was a nightmare to sort out becuase many had multiple purchases. But still sold about $350 worth in a week or $3.50 per lot on average.

NZ Post anounces new rate from July 1st of 80c for standard post. Check out stuff article. Maybe I should remove my auction of miniature sheets at below 50% Postage Value, might need them.

Well post office truly pissing me off this week!!!
Sent a package for postage,( this is a week ago), sent on the Monday returned on the Saturday!!! insufficient postage WTF!!! I actually went in to make sure I would get correct postage! The guy checked everything & said nah you 'll be right with this amount of $, so when I got it back on the Saturday with a bloody yellow sticker!!! I was quite p***ed off. So we take it back.... ( all good with trader, no worries) Yesterday and had to pay a whole separate amount for re posting!!! F F Sake!!! The guy whom told it was going to be X amount, whom measured, weighed the said package got it wrong, in the first place!!! So the young lady whom helped me yesterday said not our fault?!? GRRRRRRRR.... I paid the extra postage etc. So my hubby being the aggressive capitalistic tax man that he is, rang the PO and got all-sorts of apologies and was "sending a report through to the manager of said shop and it shouldn't happen again".... "YEAH NAH!!!"
And then I hear the news saying they are going to put up postage, "OMFG, F F Sake, Really!!!"
Might just buy a whole heap of pre pay envelopes quick before they actually put the prices!!! Apparently still valid postage and they have to accept them :P

yip, or just buy kwiw stamps......

Your hubby did right thing, there is no way they can say it is corrcet amount, get it wrong and then charge you again. The shiop should atleast be covering the original amount you had to pay and any error given they accepted your post, should be at their expense.Just mention consumer guarantees Act, you paid for a service, did not get it.......

Agree with Don

The booklet stamps in many parts are a disaster assuming they actually stick to an envelope & dont come adrift somewhere between the post box & down the track near the reciprient.

Why have all the extra fancy issues at all if they are not being used by most for standard mail ?

Many of the issues are turning into glorified revenue gathering mechanisms & going by the relatively few examples of some values must be headed to 'rarely used for normal postage' status - aside from the higher values prob putting them out of reach of anyone collecting them, unless purchased especially from PO PB in Wanganui

The lesson in if you want New Issues to attract interest from collectors & the public then they must be seen in frequent use seems to be evading those in the Marketing Section - why do they bother if they aren't being seen out there as the stamps to be bought to be used (inplace of the booklet jobs) ?

;-)

tmg - 2014-03-22 18:18:00
5733

Continuing on ---

if the mail volumes are diminishing then surely it must be more economic have fewer new issues - say 6 pa & at least have them more widely used and maybe crop the avalanche of convenient Kiwistamp booklets ? ;-)

With the push towards preprinted & plastic, the general direction of Post appears to be completely A about Face -- then they complain of reducing volumes, poor bottom line, move towards chopping deliveries - in the end analysis, just what does this do or suggest to the public ? ;-)

You can bet also that there are likely to be wholesale 1990's bulk collector packs being disassembled & being used now that the rates coming up are twice the then 40c standard post rate ;-)

Does this help Post at all ? ;-)

I'm after some help please. I have a huge amount of stamps that my parents had collected over the years. There are probably thousands of them of all ages and from lots of different countries. Some have been put in books but the majority are loose. None of the family are interested so I need to do something with them otherwise they will just be in a box in a cupboard forever. How do I go about finding someone reputable that wants to have a look at all of them and give me a value (if any) or am I best to just donate them to a collector that will appreciate them? Thanks for any advice.

Hi, A few methods and depends if you want or need money too.

You can always donate them, but collectors appreciate even if we have to pay for them. The collection will have some value and I suggest you take them to a dealer and get an offer from them to buy them. Dont then sell them immediately, put them on here at least with that amount as your reserve.

Alternative if no dealers in Wanganui, take them to Mowbrays in Otaki, or take some pics and put on this forum. Donaldo and others I trust (not a dealer myself).

The other way to go is just the $1 reserve auction. Take a good range of pics, using all 20 pics is probably best. You do risk though someone like myself buying them. I buy, take what I want for my collection and then re-sell the rest. Hope that helps a little?

Yes Donaldo, been thinking it might soon b very profitable to buy several sets, post them to myself and then sell the sued for more than mint. They will be rare enough to justify it shortly as silly as that sounds.

Yes, thats very helpful thank you.
I will give Mowbrays a ring and see what they say.
I did think about doing a $1 reserve but because some of them are quite old I think I really should get a professional opinion first.
Thanks again.

There are many aspects to the best time to close off an auction. look at who you are selling to. A thematic sheet of flower stamps probably will sell to a retired person, housewife etc so afternoon would be fine. A specialised flaw selling to a expert then perhaps later in the evening.
Selling chinese stamps then look at Chinese habits so probably best 10pm . Don't sell something during news hour or tea or travel times and not when a All BLACKS RUGBY MATCH IS ON. Sunday afternoon and early Sunday evening is good as is Monday night. Weather also has an important part and generally stamps sell well mid winter, just after Xmas but end of March is a poor time. Generally however your description and the quality of your photo is more important. It is an art to get the best price possible and there are many other aspects to also consider.

If it is a really large lot you have to advise the weight and give some specific destination prices. ie will cost...... to send to South Island. Will cost ....to send to Wellington. People need to know approx without having to ask and wait for a reply. Think of it from a buyers point of view.

Kevin looking at the images, the following thoughts occur. It looks like you have mint and used mixed. it is better to have mint offered separately from used. You also need to improve your photos so they are in focus. Perhaps you need to borrow a cellphone from a teenager or get them to do your shots. photos only cost 10 cents each so if you are selling a bulk lot of stamps don't be afraid on putting up a lot of photos. It seems from your ancillary items that your stamps don't include much issued in the last 20 years. I'd get rid of the catalogues, reference books etc.
Finally don't have great expectations as from what i can see there isn't much of value you are offering. If I am wrong with this appraisal it is because you haven't pictured the right items.
