THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
5601

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Octagonal fractional gold coins like these were manufactured privately during and after the California gold rush. But let's see what the US experts come up with.

Any assistance readers can give with a colleague's project would be appreciated: he is seeking as full a listing as possible of the serial prefixes used on the overprinted $2 notes sold by the Num. Soc. of Auckland in 2009. There were 25 Russell-signature notes and 25 Brash-signature notes produced, apparently not from sequential serial runs. Please contact me privately - a "question" on one of my listings would be fine - if you hold examples and let me know the serial prefixes (full number not required).

Looks like I got the original request slightly wrong - full numbers too, please, if possible.

Maybe it's the word "almost" that is suffering inflation here - in the same way as I "almost" live in Auckland. Or Katmandu.

"St George" in fairly dodgy style in the exergue? You'd think people would check what they're buying, wouldn't you - or even match up a picture from the Internet as a basic minimum.

Howdy, I am looking for Lefeaux bank notes in used-poor condition (in other words cheap) & I have a number of pre-decimal coins in different denominations to trade for them, many are encased and uncirculated. Can you help? cheers

Nearly a fortnight ago the Perth Mint issued a two coin Star Trek proof set with Captain James T Kirk and the USS Enterprise reverses. Now Leonard Nimoy (aka Spock) has died will they issue another coin for the fans?

Hi Colin here, need some help with trying to grow coin collecting, could a few of us, put together a guild for new collectors covering grading, fakes, cleaned coins, and what to look for in nz pre decimals. As on here and other sites there are alot of over grading and not stated cleaned coins. Well any more ideas on how to grow and keep new coin collectors?

good idea. Cleaned coins in particular are a problem on trademe. I've seen some obviously cleaned coins fetch a hefty price. We need to educate the average punter. The honest sellers are losing out to the flash gits!!

A lot of the old coin catalogues from the late 60's had great explanations of what to look for on each coin to work out grades.

If you want to work on writing something I can give you access to edit a page on the coinerrors website to list the differences and grading examples. the website software is all web based so you dont have to install anything and is rather easy to use.

Yes. Apologies for not using quotation marks. Yet these two items are not in the mere 85 pages of Australian coins in the 2015 Std Cat of World Coins 2001 to Date. As you see I'm using the book ~ thank you.

I saw the tweet from Coin News last night. I thought it a bit of a fizzer - not really a major update and not really a great likeness. I wonder if the designer was tasked just to tweak the Rank-Broadley effigy.

If it was a filled die I would have expected just the raised elements - beak and O - to be affected, but with the damage to the field and the very squished looking O, I doubt it. Acid?
