Judy why dont you auction one of your quilts or have you already done this, im sure we would all bid :)

I originally got the idea from a lady on here doing just that. She did not manage to sell it (her reserve was $100). She shared the pattern and I had planned to make one but my sister had given me so many bandannas that I got carried away.

So, her idea, turned in to a different one for me. I walk in the Relay for Life (as a 36year survivor) and we are meant to fundraise for our team. I thought if I raffled the chance to win one of a choice of the four then we stood a better chance to raise good money. My friend and I have a raffle book each and now another team member's friend who works up at Waikato Hospital has a book as well.

When the Relay is on each team has a tent site on the edge of the track and we plan to push sales of tickets during that 22 hours. It will be drawn at the end of the event and announced there.

I believe we will get a great response. So thank you for your support, I think I will be able to help you make contact this weekend.

I love this thread . . . .

Liz, although it has been a long time (my eldest is 24) I have to say we made the best choice for me to stay home when our kids were young.

Just the other day I was talking to another 'oldie' that did the same and how we all enjoyed the time we had with our kids, their friends, and the parents. I do think it was a priviledge (sp) and I know I would have hated to have had to send them off to daycare. I loved that time with them.

Please, anyone reading this, do not take this as any sort of comment on the choices you have made. I just know how I enjoyed that time and how thankful I am to have spent it the way we did.

Lol, i love the time with her, however if it wasn't for preschool 3 full days (830-230) a week i would be soooo far up the wall. She is such a social kid, and loves having the other kids to play with.

Ours loved it too, although we were at Playcentre so I was also involved. What I loved was that they were so comfortable with the other parents so when I wasn't rostered on duty they went with other families so easily. Kids definitely need the interaction with others.

I agree, it was also nice to have my own time. I loved the friendships I made as well and that has extended right through to the fact that for ten years I have been working for a company whose owners are the parents of one of my original Playcentre parent friends.

my 4 kids never went to kindy ( oops no my 1st one went to kindy for about a week ) then the 2 oldest went to school for about 2 years then i homeschooled the 4 of them right through. the last one finished school Christmas before last. I homeschooled for 22 years lol only cause there were big gaps between their ages. But i would do it all over again it was fantastic. The kids had friends all over nz and now all over the world. My son got married last year and had to have 4 best men just because they were all his best friends and you couldnt choose one over the others. They seem to be much more settled and content, and we have a fantastic relationship.
i realise its just not possible in alot of familys to only have one breadwinner and the money you are allocated for homeschooling didnt cover what they needed but i am very thankful that we were able to.

Hubby would love me to homeschool, I however KNOW i'm not cut out for teaching.
But will defiantly make sure ALL my children know how to cook, sew, budget, grow vege, clean, and have SOME kind of technical skills (even just basic woodwork etc)
I've found a lot of people in my own generation who leave home not knowing how to cook (nuking a pie DOESN'T count), can't sew a button on a shirt, can't wash the dishes, clean the oven or soak a stain out of a shirt...
However, due to a mum who cooked and sews (even if she is somewhat useless now), and being encouraged to play with wood, nails, seeds and pots, I can grow a food in a bucket, Cook food from scratch, sew (a lot more than just a button), make a small wooden table/cupboard etc if i needed, change a lightbulb, car tire, isolate a blown fuse (learnt this at midnight in 6th form), managed to budget so successfully on the DPB i think i was living a better quality of life than my case worker (a bit tongue in cheek but you get the idea).
It really REALLY annoys me that people aren't getting taught these basic life skills...

i should add i have 2 gorgous grandsons
and yes i would have to agree with liz there are a lot of young people out there that dont know the basics

a while ago a friend and i were talking about a new kind of screwdriver that was out, the other friend couldnt believe we even knew how to use them lol
#3 daughter gave #1 daughter a hammer for christmas it has a pink handle and some diamond like jewells on the handle.
Good on you Liz for bringing up your kids like that :) we had a girl stay here a while ago she was about 18 she didnt know how to wash dishes without a dishwaher and didnt have a clue what to do with a tea towel hehe she knows now. But isnt that sad .

There are six individual blocks, quilted with decorative stitching along the seam lines, then joined together with binding (I'm using that dark red/pink fabric by attaching one piece to the top of one block and another piece to the back of another and then using decorative stitching through all layers. . . .confused, I'm not.
