Should be plenty of bargains to be had with nine dealers buying and selling.

I have a stamp collection left to me by a relative. Who is a reputable person in Christchurch who would assess it for me?

Gary Tavendale Stamps,Wright Stamps,Shades Stamps and Chalon Stamps have some of the tables at the Fair let alone other Stamp collectors. As there are no retail stamp shops open in Christchurch due to the earthquakes this is a good public place to meet and greet and gleam knowledge. You will soon know if you have something or nothing.

Hi everyone,
We fundraise for the Nurse Maude Hospice, Christchurch. We've had a large collection of stamps come in from a deceased estate, about a shoebox full, mostly old NZ stamps and mostly (if not all) used. There's a lot of Royal in there. We don't know much about stamps and was wondering if there was anything we should note before starting some auctions. Should we be on the look out for anything inparticular, or group them in a particular way? Perhaps there are do's and don'ts with stamps. Please excuse my ignorance in this field!

I've just read the post above ours in regards to the fair. This could be a good place for us to start, but would they want to look at them if they weren't in an album?

Hi Maudes. I'm one of the standholders at the Christchurch Fair and I'm also happy to take a look at a box of stamps and give you an accurate appraisal. I don't charge for a verbal appraisal. i'm sure the others won't either so please bring your stamps along and make sure you show them to more than one stall holder so you have more than one opinion. I know for me it will only take a minute or two to work out within a small percentage exactly what you have is worth and how it should be sold.

regards, steven

Auction 658407905 - "Auckland Exhibition" stamps.

I would be interested in opinions as to the genuineness of the two stamps.
I'm not an expert but they look very suspect to me.
The overprints appear to be on top of the postmarks and also the overprints don't show through the back of the stamps.

The seller also has an 'inverted overprint' which at least he says could be a forgery.
I think they all are.

The overprint seems wider compared to copies I have, plus some of letters not properly formed. Fullstop at end not correct and overprint not visible from back, which they should be. I see vendor has said he is changing his listing to forgeries. Good work Phil.

i wonder if nz post has a policy for return of decimal issues including year books, presentation packs, etc ?????????

prob worth more using the mint stamps for postage at full face value, seeing as they are still able to be used

(prob not gonna do NZ Post a heck of lot of good however as they have been paid decades ago, now get to provide the service)

Don, you know very well what their policy is. The items they have sold in good condition and they are perfectly good for usage. There is no need for anybody to return them. If the item was faulty of course you have a full right of return but only for a sensible period of time.

Don if i purchased some stamps or anything else from you a number of years ago do you also have a buy back policy? I bet it is identical to that NZ post operate on.

but thanks for the info esp that in the coin thread --and surely that suggests double standards

Slightly different standards from different outfits. The old coins you can't use hence their refunds from the Reserve bank but all decimal stamps you can still use (apart from Government life stamps). The outfit which did have changeable standards was Telecom with their phonecards. If you made enough fuss then you got a credit on your telephone account when their old magnetic cards became obsolete but all their new chip cards have a stated use by or expiry date on them.

Better odds at getting something for your money than at the gallops..
But if you had a win at the cup come and spend your winnings!!!!!!!!!!

A plea for help from the Stamp Club members if I may please.
I am currently involved in a project of developing an image data base to aid in the plate reconstruction work I am doing with the Penny Universals (what else :) )
Te Papa have been most helpful with good "standard" images from their archives but now I need heaps (bulk) lots of Universals to test the software against (particularly the Waterlow Trial G9a issue).
The real challenge is to get the software to recognise what is postmark and ignore it prior to doing any comparative work against the "standard" hence the request for bulk lots of used/fine used examples.
If anyone is able to help, please let me know :)
Cheers
Roly

Why should the Taxpayer have to pay you?
Use them as postage and stop moaning about your mistake!!!!!!

im not moaning as as you say it is my problem/mistake but when you can cash in your old coins and overseas coins and banknotes either at banks, money exchanges, wellington, etc and yet cant do the same with stamps there is something wrong--now if you guys got off your arses and pressured nz post and the government to do something positive perhaps nz post would like most other businesses not be thinking about closing down services and creating the monopoly they have but start operating like most normal businesses--if they cant it is time to sell the operation off to someone that can make it work sussessfully
--all i can see from you guys is negative thoughts and a 'ITS OK' ATTITUDE--pretty typical of the NZSDA over many years

Big difference between Coin of the relm and Stamps,You paid for the stamps with coin for a sevice .
Perhaps you should be paid back twice?
Seeing as you are not satisfied?
You are the only one moaning and with negative thoughts here.

Hi all I have a large amount of stamps to sell ,on behalf ,some with higher catalogue values , Would they sell OK at a low start price or should I list them at a percentage of catalogue .
I know I can not expect top dollar but I do not want to give them away as there has been money invested in them and I wish to get the best return for the owner.

You will get a premiem price for the perfect stamp, nicely centred, full perfs,MNH,or used with a nice postmark, off the face of the earlier stamps.
Later stamps nice light readiable postmark to one cnr of stamp.
No wrinkles ,bends ,stains, tears or pulled perfs.
All the rest and this will be the majority of the collection(Mint Hinged, and unforgiving postmarks etc) will demand far lesser prices.Very much the same as coins.Condition rules.I would personally start the good ones at 1/3 to 50% of cat and start bthe rest at about 10%.
But it is a funny world and sometimes the rules dont apply, knowledge is king, take the collection to a local Stamp dealer or Stamp club and get some advice. If it is an exseptional collection your best bet would be to send it to a Stamp Auction House in NZ or offshore.

I have never been a collector of stamps but was given some a while ago and have decided to sell them on trademe. Can someone tell me what the difference is in value between stamps that have been used and ones that are still new and on a sheet? All the ones I have are new, but also some of mine are "unhinged"on a sheet and some are new but are on "first day covers" or special envelope things. Some are presentation pack/booklet things too. Someone told me they thought the used stamps had more value but I would of thought the opposite?

I have been working full time in the stamp business for over 40 years now and am still learning. Normally a mint (Unused stamp is worth more than a postmarked one but its not always so. What you ask is not possible to answer in a short reply but I'd suggest you go to your local library and borrow a stamp catalogue and start from there.
