Twi are you a member of FAO or are you in denial lol hehe

yeah i collected nz stamps with the kids then i took it over, it got out of hand, nz post were bringing out too many soooooo i just concentrated on the pre-decimal i have most of them - the ones i dont are way too expensive. then i went on to nz postmarks sooooo interesting how they changed names of places and the history of it all. i will continue with that one day.

what does your dad collect Twi i have a few spares here ;) nz or world or both ?

coalrange1 - 2010-02-18 15:47:00

he collected nz only and first day covers (i think thats wat they are called), he stopped collecting a few years ago now. i use to collect but when i stopped i gave them to him. must have a look at them some time
i sure he collected netherlands aswell . he was swapping with a friend from over there

OK, i think it's nap time for me, just sewed together 224 2.5" squares... (into pairs) thats 112 2.5" seams... and now i gotta sew the pairs together... maybe that can be tomorrows job, the light is turning even crappy than it was before, and no indoor lights near my machine so sewing will be daytime only for now

probably, but that would involve stealing said lamp from hubby's model railway stuff, which is in the loft that i have extreme difficulty getting to due to my bump. So i'll leave it there for him for his trains

nope, although thankfully they've gone back to "plain/lemonade" as opposed to the "lime" they trialled last year

arghhhhhh *tears hair out* now i can't get the release knob undone on the flywheel... which means i can't wind a new bobbin, and i just run out of thread on mine!!!!

liz_taylor - 2010-02-19 15:57:00
5530

Help please, again oh wise quilters . . . . what is the best (and most economic) thread to use for machine quilting. I am going to use a decorative stitch over all my 'slashed' seams so I guess I'll go through a fair bit. Off to buy whatever I need shortly. Thanks

hi judy iv just used a gutterman veragated thread for my stitch in the ditch on my bright quilt, i think most threads a not cheap, you will probably want to use a good quality thread if you are going to do all that lovely work, thats my opinoin

twilight23 - 2010-02-19 16:31:00
5533

Is it cotton, rayon or polyester?

yduj - 2010-02-19 16:34:00
5534

the gutterman is 100% cotton and its 300 meters i bought it from spotlight

twilight... i'm looking at using the purple gutterman variegated for my quilt i'm working on right now... Had a 5 min breather outside came back in and the wheel loosened easy as, so now have all the little 4 square blocks sewn and pressed. Will start putting the blocks together on Monday (dont sew on weekends due to jam-making and a 3 year old a husband and other distractions)

liz_taylor - 2010-02-19 16:55:00
5536

hi liz yes the purple one is really nice, iv got the light blue, green and the red,it is slightly thicker but really nice to work with, wat jam are you making this weekend??

hubby is going to do a batch of cherry jam and a batch of mixed berry jam (tonight) may get a batch of plum or the last batch of apricot done tonight

5538

hi i havent sewn at all lol
just took #2 daughter to T&A's new place she hadnt been there, its looking so good. "A" paints and has done some amazing pics, with them hung up and their furniture and bits and pieces in the house is looking really neat :)

hubby just got home from diving mmmm crayfish for tea yum ( i can share if you want to come )

i use gutterman for the quilting, any old thing for other sewing but the quilting has to be the best. i buy the 800 meter reels they are $16 which if you dont go silly and do the quilting way too small will go along way :)

Thats what i'm planning on doing, picked up a few rolls of good but still polyester thread for my piecing a couple months back, not going to pick up my verigated for this quilt until i can take the top down (finished) to decide on a backing and binding colour as well

tis sad Judy, not much to finish it but then perhaps the seller has made alot in the past and has now moved on to something else.
hows your quilt coming along ?

coalrange1 - 2010-02-19 20:02:00

I have the six blocks all done, bought pyjama material for the back as this is a baby's quilt. Was going to cut that tonight and discovered there is a fault in the fabric (admittedly I did buy it at Fabric Barn and I think they get seconds etc).

I've decided I can work around the problem rather than go back and see them, and after all while I was in there yesterday I got them to all buy tickets in my quilt raffle :-).

I've just popped it into the washing machine and I'll have a go tomorrow. I reckon I'll have a bit of a result to show on here before the weekend is out.

I'm impressed by what you guys do - are you mostly retired and free to quilt to your hearts content? I'm at work all week and since I started the canteen quilts I find I'm thinking about quilting when I should be working. Lucky they can't be reading my mind. My boss is a quilter and she brought a beauty in today that she and her daughter had made for her granddaughter's 21st. The combined effort worked well as they shared the tasks.

Which reminds me, my boss told me of this idea and I think it's great - set up your ironing board at right angles to your sewing machine table and sit in a swivel chair. As you piece, turn to the right and iron as you go - works a treat.

Also, if you nick the very corners off any new fabric and put it in a pillowslip in the washing machine it doesn't tend to fray and tangle like crazy.

Nope im not retired, i do the books for our business.

thanks for tips, they are always helpful.

i spose you cant sell raffle tickets on trademe aye ? then we could all buy some

5546

wow thats a nice pattern i love that effect,if you get the pattern you have to share coalie lol hehe, cant understand why they are selling
judy i was made redundant a year ago, i have 3 kids 2 at home still at school, im a single mummy, 55 this year, and first time on a benifit lol, but still looking for a retail postion, i have worked at spotlight for 3 years thats were i got most of my fabric, and have just put in an other application form there this week ,

so this does allow me to sew and quilt to my hearts content

thats a good tip with the ironing board and the washing of new fabric

twilight23 - 2010-02-19 20:46:00
5548

I'm 57 but our kids have flown the nest . . . so I finally have a space that can be left set up for sewing.

I find that this is still an expensive "hobby" and do scrounge cheap options if I can. Such as some of those quilts are sandwiched with an old woollen blanket inside instead of batting. I will have to make sure I let the winner know that so that they wash it appropriately.

I have a plan about the raffle. When I'm photographing the quilt I'm working on this weekend, I will also photograph my raffle 'flyer' and we'll see if there will be something to see that will help you make contact, hahaha
