Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Came across one of these the other day, should have been 1.119 kg of .9999 platinum. It is 899gm of good quality stainless steel. Nice packaging, slightly worn look . My one actually had the correct spelling of "Johnson " and comes in the brass tin with COA plaque,see....

Got a 2005 Australia five cent coin. There seems to be larger than normal gap with the last two letters in "Australia" not close to the rest of Australia.

Was this a error with the 2005 % cent coins, or am I looking for something that isnt there?

It could be a mint error - can you post a clear photo?

I have an old Roman coin encased in lava rock from Vesuvius. The coin is loose and rattles. Many fingers have tried to removed it and 'polished' it. Is it still worth $1.00?

I see what you meant originally - the spacing does look wide. Would be interesting to compare it against others.

Kind of odd - the Naira is still legal tender as far as I know, though whether that N1000 note is still current is another story. Bloomberg says current exchange is NZ$7.27 so the starting price is ambitious, especially after he went to all that trouble to fold it.

The $100 starting price has now changed to $1. My question seems to have made him change his mind about it.

Looks to be a French medal or jeton commemorating the defence and exile of Scipio. The date at the bottom will count from the foundation of Rome in 753 BC, so 565/6 = 188/7 BC. See here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scipio_Africanus
and
http://www.uvm.edu/~bwalsh/romciv/ScipioTrial.html
The date of the Livy quote ties in with the date on the medal.

5526

If you Google the legends
"exil volontaire de scipion" "a.r. 565"
you'll find a bronze example (maybe in slightly better condition) for sale by Delcampe. It's described as 18th century, one of a series of 61 medals by Dassier illustrating historical personages and events in Roman history, each side of each medal reflecting a different event. In this case the defence and then the exile of Scipio.

My turn now :-)
I received this medal in the mail from a chap who wants to know more about it. It's clearly a replica of an NZ shilling, dated 1942, but is 46mm in diameter and weighs 24.1g. Cast (seam on the edge) and a blank "obverse" with an ornamental border, presumably for engraving. Assume it's brass or other muck metal with a silver(ish) coating. Curious to know if anyone's ever seen anything similar or knows anything definite about it.
It was published in the Num. Soc. of Auckland "Mintmark" Newsletter a couple of years ago, with no joy to my knowledge.

I guess if his other coins graded as AU are anything to go by then this could well be called gold.

Love his 1946 halfcrown; but let's be generous as perhaps he's selling his 'prides and joys' so he can buy new lenses.

Here is latest :

Morning Ross
Just an update to say took it to my friend and can confirm it is definately a die struck coin, and not a replica cast coin.
Will be seeing my watchmaker today and will ask him about the possibility of drilling a spot hole through the rim edge to extract some of the core metal.
These drills are so small, that you can’t really see them.
Will check back with refiner if such a small amount would be able to be tested satisfactorly to give a result, before we do any drilling
I believe in 1945 , some experimentation was carried out on various blanks of different makeups to the 50% silver as a possible replacement for the silver coinage.
This could be one of those.

All the best
Alan

The latest on the 1945 1/2 Crown for those interested. I will be putting it up for sale.

Morning Ross,
Yes, has come back as a Aluminium/ Magnesium mix showing up as the main base metal component.
We ended up getting the jeweller to re cut with a very fine file a couple of the reeded edges where they and been compressed , and was sufficient to get through the outer silver layer without having to drill into the coin.
Is still a mystery as to its origin as can find no other references to others being found to match this one.
It certainly has a curiousity about it and a real talking point.
Is there any other test or action you would like done while it is here in Auckland before I send it back to you?
All the very best
Alan

For anyone keen on collecting these imitation guinea/half-guinea tokens, there's an interesting reference here: http://tinyurl.com/o8p89vd . The listed one looks like one of nos. 109-113. Item SG7 here: http://tinyurl.com/njadl3t identifies the maker. With more time I'd love to get into these more myself.

And some mug buys it!!
