hi all! am so blessed to be getting my hands on blackcurrents, gooseberry's etc again this year, for home and Corps (church). made plum sauce last night and have rubabrb and the berry fruit in the frezzer ready to roll over our holidays - yep am sooooooo content to spend time in the kitchen relaxing amongst the fruit! for those in the south of the south, head thru to ettrick as prices not to bad on stone fruit and good bottling and jaming etc to be had. Gore wollies have cherries for $7kg, not bad if you want to bottle some. pick thru those as they are ripe. have started to dry herbs as well as they also are in abundence. take care and have a brill day!

Hi.. :-).. your goodies sound delicious.. and the loads of yummy fruits to preserve that you have nearby must make preserving a dream with such abundance.. yum!... roll on the next few years as my fruit trees begin to have fruit to harvest and make goodies from.. and my vege gardens establish and grow.. The area around our new home will be levelled soon, with the top soil that was moved aside for the house spread and levelled to make new lawns, vege garden and fruit trees .. can't wait! Happy 2009 Everyone.. :-)

Awesome thread - I made my own yoghurt !! -very successful using milk powder, water, 3 tablespoons store bought yoghurt as a starter and a tsp on gelatin (to give a thicker consistancy). Used it plain in savoury cooking and have mixed in sweetened fruit pulp for a sweet version.

Breadcrumbs I never buy them.......keep all your crusts in a plastic bag in freezer until you have a bag full. Heat oven on a low heat 150 C, spread out in a baking dish and dry them out for an hour. You can even turn off the oven and leave them to dry as the oven cools down. Then pulse in a food processor until fine. Bag up again and freeze.

White / Cheese Sauce MIx I got this off SS site but haven't tried it myself yet:

2 cups (500g) powdered milk (I use skim)
1 cup (250g) plain flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 cup (250g) butter or margarine.

Combine dry ingredients, add butter and blend until mix resembles dry breadcrumbs. Put in large air tight container. Store in fridge & use within two months. I label the container with the date and method.

Method:-
To make sauce combine, 1/2 cup mix to 1 cup
cool water. Add flavourings to suit, for example, curry, vegetables, onions, cheese, whatever you like

Hi everyone. I have recently started making my own bread. am wondering what flour people use? I have used standard but in the past used a champion brand called "strong" flour ( green pack ) but can't seem to buy it anywhere. Std flour seems to make my bread a bit cakey - any hints gladly accepted.

bump - wot?? no bread makers out there??? she says as she smells the wonderful aroma of baking bread and watches the yeast bubble and rise on the windowsill - you don't know what you are missing. Guess i'll do a phone call to the Champion flour people and ask them. thanks anyway.

We're baking bread! lol Not ignoring you! While the green pack of Champion flour is probably the best for bread, I can't get it often so use Champion's Pink pack which is High grade flour. It's recommended for bread and heavy fruit cakes. I've had less luck with other brands which seem to rise irregularly (or maybe it's me)and produce a more dense texture. Many of the organic bread flours are excellent if expensive. Have fun.

bulk apples buy them in bulk when they are cheap. Then individually wrap each one in paper and lay them in a cardboard box and place in a dry shady room. Keeps them for an extremely long time!!!

thanks silvertiger7 apparently the Bakels brand "bakers flour" available in bulk at Gilmours is the nearest - so will give that a go.... MMMMM was cheese and bacon rolls yesterday - made from an American fiends "Amish" bread recipe - made 2 doz and my 3 sons wolfed them in about 10 minutes flat! Have to make them and hide them next time!!

Cheap homemade shampoo and conditioner wtd plse Hi sorry if this has been asked (looked through couldn;t see) but does anyone have a recipe for shampoo and/or conditioner? The ones I like now cost $40 a bottle!!! and I just can;t do it any more but the cheapies are horrible. heard you can rinse using cider vinegar but not sure whether it would smell bad??

Hi Tracey.. :-) hope all is well there.. Saline solution can help.. a 1/2 tsp of salt in 1/2 a glass of warm water.. you could use a little nasal sprayer or an eye dropper - or have a swim in the sea so the salt water helps.. Gargling with the salt solution will help sore throats and that back of the throat/nose area too. You can buy saline solution nasal sprays which would help also.. hope your patient is feeling well quickly.. Cheers.. Julie

cedar vingear might work for a hair rinse, I am not sure, but I have used white vingear for a hair rinse, it works well, makes the hair soft, doesn't smell

Laundry detergent (modified from Kob's recipe) You need: a 250ml cup, a 2 litre container (I use an old dishwashing powder container - don't use a food container as some idiot might drink the stuff). washing soda, and Eco Store laundry powder (this dissolves well, and stacks up well against other powders which are cheaper per packet but where you need to use much more to get a good clean).

Fill cup to about 2/3 full with washing soda, pour over boiling water and pour the slush into your 2 litre bottle. Fill the bottle almost to top with hot water, leaving about 2 cups space at the top. Put 2 scoops of Eco powder into the cup and then add very hot water, stir a bit and pour into the two litre container, repeat once to get all the powder out of the cup. Put lid on and turn up and down a few times to dissolve.
Use 1 cup of mix per machine load - should do 8 loads. I've been using this for almost a year, and it's really good in either hot or cold water.

winter soup I use my left over vegs in the fridge at the end of the week. chop up finely and put in a large pot (carrots, corn, peas, ect. and two packs of barley soup mix and top up with water. chop up one packet of bacon(anysort) then add a large chopped up pumkin this will thicken it. boil. when cool mash it but leave it chunky. i put it into plastic drink cups which i freeze. pop one into a soup cup and m/wave for 2mins. nice with toast fingers. 20lt pot makes about 15 plastic drink cups. enjoy.

Can anyone help me please I have what I think is chewing gum on my black pants. I must have sat on it but didn't notice till I brought the pants in off the line! There's just 2 small spots and I've scraped them but the pale marks are still showing on the dark colour of the trousers.
