Exactly to the point donaldo, I'm glad you agree. Nobody but the seller has the stamp and therefore it is impossible to adjudge as to the likely-hood of it being a 2 or a 5. Therefore we must take at face value the sellers description of said. He said it is NOT a "P". Therefore, if it is a 2 or a 5 then this would be a VERY RARE stamp indeed and command a good price. Yet it was listed at and sold at a very reasonable price. Well done Gary. Also regarding your comment re: my questioning Gary, I think it is a good thing to question things, or people. We must be able to defend our decisions. And this opens debate and dialogue allowing people to learn and foster their passions and interests, to open their minds to others. "I Disagree With Everything You Say, But I Will Defend To The Death Your Right To Say It." -- Voltaire. Now, further to that, I have a question. Has anyone seen this "error" in the Postage Dues. The chopped 2. Regards Anthony http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/271495732.jpg

The general rule about declaring something as a legitimate variety rather than a gremlin, poor printing etc is that you MUST find two examples showing the same variety is constant. It is also a bonus if the variety can be located on a plate but really to call it a variety you must have at least two copies showing the same characteristics.

something such as the flattened top to the 2 on the postage due could be caused by a wide number of causes such as a small bit of paper laying on either the printing plate or the paper it is being printed on. This can happen for example with bits of paper from perforating residue which is called a "Confetti" flaw. Note that they are called flaws rather than varieties. The moral of the story is that to be able to call it a variety you need to have more than one example.

Hi kiwisteven, Thanks for that. You have hit on exactly what I am looking for. A continuous run of the same "variety" which would give it more standing. I am hoping that the 2 was actually damaged resulting in a good "print run" before being noticed and corrected. As postage dues are not as common or collectable generally, I was hoping someone might have seen one in their travels.

There is a specialist book on the Dues written by my old friend (now deceased) Robert Samuel who was the expert on postage due stamps. Have you had a look in the book? Most stamp clubs will have a copy you can take a look at if you are a member.

I have found for many auctions the good old $1 works, alternatively you can try face value for them, but I have had to sell mint before below face value of the stamps.

we need NZ post to have stamps that dont require their staff to tape them onto parcels too......just had a buyer annoyed that they had doen that, he thought it was me. My local shop tapes all stamps on all parcels. It makes me cringe.

I always frank my letters with the correct postage and when unsure of larger items ask over the counter or bring my possible postage along.
Some dealers have extra staff to do the mailing and they normally have lots of postage available and do not need the PO to dictate what type of postage is to be put on, for small mail anyway.

Well you could also arm yourself with a good lot of higher face value stamps - $1.00 plus to stick on as postage.
Stamps are after all for the prepaid conveyance of mail.

How many colelct wage tax, employment relief stamps?

If you do, you colelect years or also varieities / flaws?

I have listed in the past some mixed general lots, now considering if its worth doing more specialised listings.

Hi all good Stamp Club Members, time to make another impassioned plea. Do any of you have any "RUNCIMAN" postmarks that are no longer required in your collection?
Being one of Captain James Runciman's decendants I am trying to put a small study of the Runciman postmark together, the aim is to get a nice postmark for every year of the Post Office being open :)
Cheers all.......................

Hi Don, Went to Whakatane P.O. to post an ACS catalogue to Auz and the lady at the counter couldn't have been more helpful. I asked for an assortment of postage stamps and she sorted 12 different stamps and placed a backing for the stamps to be fixed to on the package then offered to have them hand franked. I was a happy chappy.

Hi there. I am sorry that I haven't read all this thread! It is very long and the answer to my question is probably in here but I am hoping that someone might answer me a few questions. I have been given thousands of stamps in plastic shopping bags and I really don't know what to do with them. I don't have the time (or the inclination really) to go through them all. They were my dad's Aunty's and I am sure there will be some that might be worth some money in there but there are just so many to sort through - and I wouldn't even know what I was looking for. I see that some are unsoaked off their original paper and others have been removed. There are quite a few of those first day cover things and presentation collection things. I guess ultimately, I want to get some money for them if I can but I am not sure how to best go about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

The Royal Philatelic Society of New Zealand has announced that Expert Committee fees are now $90.00 per item for members, and $150.00 for non-members. People send stamps to them for expertising and they are the main place which issues expert certificates. It seems to me that these costs are are a bit excessive, especially those for non-members. what do others think?

It is a bit over the top for the members a $20.00 increase and we are the backbone of the Society. It would almost be cheaper to send them out of the country for a certificate.

How long would it take to get a certificate from RPSNZ ?
How long will it take to get a certificate from an overseas Expertiser ?

Can anyone speculate on both time frames ?

No not the same ,all stamps to be specialized have to go through a panel of at least 3 Experts from memory. And it is the actual stamp used not a scan.
The main difference being is that they are experts in their field (the Royal) and here a lot of expert wanabies.(for the most part but not all)

Get in contact with the likes of Campbell Patterson, Mowbrays, ACS or others that deal in International markets, they will more than likely verify the stamps for free and tell you if they are Fakes or the real thing. Then they will be able to advise you on the best way to dispose of them so you can get top dollar.Remember that Trademe has a limited Market and is not worldwide. My personal choice would be Campbell Patterson as they will look at them ,Verify if they are right or not and give written verification of their findings. As good as any certificate on the market.
