Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

The claim that it's been in the family for ages is as genuine as the coin.

Any trace of a pin on the back? Assume it's a public relations/press badge.

Yes, that is the problem with these counterfeit coins, they are not stamped copy or replica and plenty of unsuspecting folk are going to be ripped off.

Just signed for 4 Aussie proof sets at 42.00 all up; not replica's I hope;

Just got a lot that I should have missed if someone had done a large bid early on when I was in the garden.

Two of us recent posters missed out on listing # 806653327 GB & Irish Coins/Token x 3 at $58.77 on Nov 19. Now reappeared as 3 separate lots, the1752 halfpenny has an improved appearance (somehow...... anyone?) and has a current bid of $95.00.

It wasn't originally listed there - it was only moved following some 3rd-party input, whereas it should have been deleted entirely.

Whatever it's been treated with has taken away the mark on the reverse, along with the natural tone and left some rather nasty rusty orange colouring, unless it's a trick of the light.

Listing # 817013740 Ancient Type Coins x 2 In Reproductions went for $124.99 Obviously two bidders thought these were genuine coins. But were these real? (No reflection on seller).

The seller clearly wasn't sure, and was open about it. Hopefully the buyer does the research and it turns out they are. Meanwhile that not bad-looking gros tournois from the same seller went for less in the end, despite a good three-way fight :-)

Don the seller is Tom Taylor Young Daughter, Tom died this year and Julie has taken over the Business,Toms trademe id was nz-cs.
i think Martin knows Julie & Tom.

Not his daughter, I don't think - not sure of the exact relationship. But yes, she's been winding down the last of Tom's stock.

Yes only 1000 Proof sets this year, all sold out...
You can see the general circulation mintage numbers here... download the xls:
http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/statistics/tables/f4/

I believe the next update they make should show the closing general numbers for this year... No $1 coins this year perhaps?

I see that was sold through heritage auctions, then ebay, before finding its way on to trademe. I have a suspicion the reserve is not going to be sensible!

if so way inclined seller could crack that coin out of its pcgs holder and sell it as full mint lustre. It's been done before on trademe, so I've heard. Although you'd have to say that would not be entirely honest. But it'd increase chances for a good price!

Why is it that in NZ we cannot buy rolls/bags of current unc coins at face value, like you can in most countries
Trader in Europe looking for them, and does not believe me that we cannot obtain them . I told him that the best we could do is aUNC from out of daily change.Apparently even the NZ banks cannot supply them, and the best they will do is sell you a bag/roll for you to pick thru and than take the balance back (hopefully)
e

The problem is the only companies that can get hold of new coins are those like ACM or Armourguard and they are not to interested in selling to collectors in small quantities. I purchased a few lots of $1 coins from one company this year but had to purchase a minimum of $15,000 each time I did it. This was not at face value either they charged me the shipping / handling fees on top so I doubt I will do this in the future as this was more costly than I anticipated. If you are after 10-50 cent coins let me know I can keep an eye out at work as the new ones turn up in reserve bank wrapped rolls straight from the mint around this time of the year but post cost add up fast with weight etc.

thanks for info- wonder why they will not release rolls to NZ Post collectables

Not entirely sure but I assume by the time they get them pay for secure delivery then store them for how ever long they can not make the markup required on them to cover cost. I have thought about taking a number of rolls i have back to work but the error hunter in me wants to search them before I do that lol. It is hard enough handing the new rolls out at the bank haha

So is it the security companies that make up the rolls and supply them to the banks-do the banks never get them direct from treasury/reserve bank

Banks only get money delivered from security companies these days and to be honest banks do not even hold a lot of the money at the branches it is mainly stored at secure facilities hence the bank branches are getting smaller as the vaults are not needed. Banks do not even have anything to do with loading most atm's this is all contracted out. I guess from the Reserve banks position it means they do not have to deal with many customers just the limited few so this reduces labour costs.

Coins produced at the Canadian Mint 10-50 cent come rolled in reserve bank paper straight after being produced (these are often from the same dies so if you find one die error chances are you will find a few more). The Mint put the rolls into boxes so 50 cents are in a $500 box
http://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/351862929.jpg
http://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/351863035.jpg

When coins are deposited back in the bank and if the bank has excess they send it back to the security company to be re-rolled for easy counting and checking and that is when you get the ACM rolls that are a slightly different colour to the mint rolls and have the security company name on them.

$1 coins come from the Royal Mint (UK) and come in loose bags of $1000 all from the same machine die. This is why some errors are isolated to certain regions of the country however most security companies have one central distribution point from what I can find out
http://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/351863176.jpg
interesting fact with that photo is that the coins were packaged and possably made in 2011 however all dated 2010

Once the security companies get the $1 and $2 coins in bags they rip them open and roll them so new unc rolls are often very hard to find but do come out when needed in circulation (normally public holidays). The only way you will normally know if all the coins are UNC in a roll is to manage to find bags of $1000 coins rolls that all show mint coins on the end and to open a few to confirm. Unrolled bags of $1 coins are almost never seen by banks and the only ones I have seen were the ones I requested and purchased privately

Sorry for the novel lol

the obverse of a florin can often seem to be very nice, and is not a good indicator of the amount of wear on the kiwi side.

The pic chefman referenced didn't seem to show a join, so I don't think it's two views of the same coin either.
