Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Why do people bid like this (Barber Half Dollar) and pay more than necessary? Still it lets the seller buy the Loaves and Fishes with the surrplus.

Unless it's a habit, it could just be a matter of accidentally failing to tick the "auto-bid" box.

Hi, complete newbie here.
I have a number of coins I can list but have no confidence in how to grade.

foal30 - 2014-11-16 13:36:00

Is it best to take to a coin dealer and they look at them? Are there any dealers in Christchurch?

I have some experience with Comics and would not want to be selling items that are not accurately graded.

If they're NZ coins, see the link I posted above (previous page?) with scans of RL Clarke's grading guide, which might help a little.

Delete the full stop at the end - it's getting picked up as part of the URL - I just tested it :-)

Can someone help me identify a few coins I have? Either Chinese or Japanese I think. Not sure how I can upload a pic tho..

Have a few coins - their either Japanese or Chinese. Anyone here that cod tell the difference? And maybe their nz currency worth?

Instructions on uploading pics have been posted a few times in this group - though you may have to scroll back a good few pages. Basically go to My TradeMe > My photos > Upload photo and follow the steps from there, then open the pics on-screen and copy-and-paste the links here. Telling where your coins are from should be fairly straightforward.

the trouble with "auto-bid" is that some weasel can slowly, but inexorably, work their way up to your bid amount, as there is no time limit because of the stupid auto-extend!!

Still better than putting your max on straight away and paying $50 (or whatever) more than you might actually have needed to!

Keen to know more about the "two die varieties" of the 1906-07 Dunedin Tramway tokens (G18) if anyone has details/images pse. I have a few of these tokens in hand but haven't spotted any differences yet. Ditto the two varieties of the Runanga quarter loaf tokens (G90), which seem to be coming onto the market in quite large numbers now.

another thing I hate about auto-extend is that when you think you have finally seen off some weasel, then out of the blue, another bloomin turkey shows up to harass you!!!

Different tactics for different opposition . Use all of the field, not just straight up the middle each time you have the ball

They pretty much all appear to be school or kitchen science experiments - no silver 2c were made that year for NZ, or indeed ever (from memory there may have been collector sets of all denominations in silver for Western Samoa but the designs would have been different). Try scratching the edge and see if any of the underlying bronze shows through.

Sounds like you just don't care for competition at the table. As a buyer, I prefer to have no competition either, but I sure do like it when I am selling.

I have a feeling there's a rugby versus grid-iron dichotomy in play here. Please note that I am in no way disagreeing with you.

So who saw the rather odd mock-up $20 note in today's Dominion Post with Lorde occupying the Queen's spot? No relevance at all to the accompanying article, which simply said that new designs were coming. My son was briefly taken in - wonder how many else were.
