Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Has anyone seen any good auctions for a 1706 Queen Anne half crown recently?

Any recommendations on what to look out for? TIA

Should you find one, I am guessing the first feedback for the seller will be worth a chuckle, and the second one will raise eyebrows. And the background in the images? Remarkably familiar.

Well picked.

I just tried to ask if this coin had been cleaneed and I am Black listed.
Gosh I just don't understand how I can be black listed by so many people in Auckland that sell high priced but great quality coins.

Interesting thread about a trader apparently using another traders coin photos on their auctions, worth a gander if it hasn't been removed.

Both Echoriath and Shayne45 have previously posted hints and tips on how to photograph coins. Unfortunately TM doesn't recognise that such information is useful to traders and indiscriminately removes it!

So, heavily abbreviated, but here are a few steps to improving your photos of coins -

1. Switch camera to macro (looks like a little flower) if it has the setting.
2. Make sure flash is turned off.
3. Photograph by a bright window but NOT in direct sunlight.
4. Use a tripod or a beanbag/cushion to steady the camera.

With macro turned on you should be able to focus on the coin with the coin filling most of the frame of the picture. Trim the photo afterwards to remove extra background - that way it's harder for people to come along later and clip out your signature.

Ideally if you're going to be doing lots of photos of coins a light box is a good investment but the out of direct sunlight near a bright window will work pretty well on sunny/bright days. A white sheet of paper can also be used to reflect light back onto the coin. This diffuses the light which reduces bright reflections which ruin the detail that the photo captures and makes focussing harder. The set up runs paper - coin - window, and if you play around with the angle of the paper you will see it casts illumination onto the coin. Of course you need something to balance the paper against........

Thoughts on using others' pictures:

Having nice, clear pix uploaded directly to TM (rather than through an intermediate website) can help ensure people don't borrow your photos, and I have become a fan of manually adding my trader name to my photos myself rather than relying on TM's method, which can also obscure parts of the coins.

I crop and join my photos (front and back of coins) and add my name in the middle somewhere so it cannot simply be cropped out. A motivated person can still use my images if they take the time to photoshop out my trader name, but I can at least make the task a bit more like work for the would-be photo pincher.

Smart prospective buyers will always check with a seller that the items in photos are the items they are bidding on.

I agree with the view that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. There's another trader (who occupies a place of honour on my black list) who over time edited both his auctions and profile to include remarkably similar text to mine. Does it bother me? Nah, I have bigger fish to fry.

I'll bear that in mind. I'm still trying to find a knife small enough to fillet the little buggers.

I'm guessing the knife would be on a similar scale to the violins we play when the alternative identities of a banned trader come on here to whine about how they can't grasp TMs rules of trading.

Sticking to my subject areas:

3.* VF = U$31
MS-65 = $185,000

6**. VF = NZ$80

I am guessing the French one is in not so good nick given that the mint mark sounds like it is hard to read, so it might be more like scrap/filler value, which is about NZ$30. Naturally, it's whatever the market will bear. And take good pix.

Yep look uncleaned now. Amazing what lighting can do to make something look not what it is.
You have a nice lot of coins there.

Please don't blacklist me for asking questions OK.

My advice CITA would be to blacklist Lester36 and a few more people.

(That way there'll be less competition for me!!)
