Can anyone help me by suggesting a good but cheap inkjet printer that will easily use generic cartridges that are available. I have been using a Brother
for the past 7 years, but is big and clunky and just died. I usually only print knitting patterns, so it doesn't need to be hi tech.

You can get a brother laser and get knock off toner cartridges which work fine.

This is what you need. Not how much the thing costs, what other people say, just what it will cost in cartridges/toner per page.
That's the trick, most printers, laser or ink, cost a fortune to run.
Do your research.

99% black?

If you are generally only printing black, then don't even bother with an inkjet, it's a waste of the other inks.
Get a cheap Mono Laser printer
Far more reliable & cheaper to run, Toners are really cheap on TM

HP/ Brother/ Canon.

Wouldn't touch a lexmark or Kyocera

Kyocera usually have really good cost per page. HP make some utter garbage low end printers.

Never had or seen any problems with any HP printers apart from user error (including cost of ink errors)
Every kyocera & lexmark printer I have had come in for recycling, is stuffed

Why does it need to be an inkjet? Is colour so important for the knitting patterns? If not youd be FAR better off with a small black and white laser. More upfront, far less over time.

It needs to be an inkjet for the same reason you need an i7 10gen laptop for playing facebook games & emails
Also the same reason you need to buy a new tv when the manufacture stops updating the onboard apps.

Ahh NO. Not unless you never heard of Chromecast or any of the many other options. But yeah some get suckered.

In the OP's case if it's really only B/w printing perhaps they just never considered a Lazer. Many people would only think they are for businesses use. AS you say in that case probably marketing indeed.

The current HP deskjet range is utter shite to set up and use, in terms of speed, and ease of use.
I'd expect almost every printer being recycled is stuffed, regardless of brand.

Here are a few models of small lasers to consider, they are much faster than an ink jet, prints are dry, generally have much higher resolution and are much, much cheaper to run.

OKI B412dn ( I own one of these, it's brilliant, well in a black and white way)

Nah, had a lot of perfectly good printers come in.
in the last 5 years, have never paid for printers or paper for the workshop or home
Sold a lot of printers as well.

A good supplier and their cartridges are new and have the proper chip. My Epson has never missed a beat and they are so much cheaper than 'genuine'.

you find what ink is sold the cheapest then you look what printers it fits. and then you look if that printer suites you . if not find the next cheape ink and repeat.. I have a epson cx9300F and all 4 ink is 8 to 12 $ a set from jerryscience.

Yesterday had a Brother mono Laser come into our Recycle center,Brother HL 2140, with a new spare toner,a full paper tray ,original owner documents and a CD ,,Asked the dude ,
"Whats up with the printer ?" ,oh nothing it goes fine" ,we just wanted a new one ! so i checked it out ,hell its good ,so now we have four printers in our shop ,good to go $25 $35 and $45 plus one at $15 ! ha, that last one should of been $45 too, but i stuffed up the pricing gun ,and couldn't be arsed to change it ,toodle doo ,some one will get a bargain !
