Virus - Security

#Post

My PC had a virus that deleted my windows system off my hard drive decided, with my computer guy, to install a new hard drive - of course lost everything. But have soldiered on. I always have the free Malwarebytes installed - downloaded new one which gives you premium for 14 days, was thinking of buying it when trial is nearly up - or should i look at Kasperky anti-virus (which someone recommended)? Have to say I am still worried as Malwarebytes is constantly giving popups saying blocked trojans, ransomeware etc 'outbound' - am wondering if i still have a virus on my computer - as a blog site refused to open for me and said 'Wordfence' stopped me. Would Kasperky help sort out if i still had the virus on my computer? I am not super computer literate but any help would do. Thanks

Have you thought that the blog site your going to has dodgy stuff on it.

Viruses do not delete operating systems.
And a new harddrive is totally extreme for a clean up anyway.
Thats like tossing your entire car cause you had the wrong petrol in it.

But however, yes kapersky is good....or Nod32. Far batter than what you have been using.

What would delete the windows operating system then?

yes know it was extreme - but it was an older hard drive - i had saved my photos which was the major concern. lost my bookmarks.

As for the blog site - it's an independent news site "The Standard" so doubt it is dodgy.

Sounds like either you're going somewhere dodgy or you've managed to download something dodgy or your 'computer guy' is useless.

Firstly I'd really like to know how a virus deleted windows off your hard drive - this would be exceptionally unusual to say the least. Just what virus was this supposedly ? What did it do that YOU noticed ?

And if the computer guy reinstalled Windows and ran suitable scans on the system and declared it virus free then theres only one way you could have gotten more and that's from the internet. So I"m thinking no matter what Antivirus program you get it's not going to prevent you from having an issue necessarily unless you take a GOOD look at what's been happening or is currently happening.

If you want the BEST paid Antivirus system available it's generally considered to be Eset Antivirus.

Oh yeah - just picked up that you said the computer guy installed a new hard drive ? Really ? To remove a virus ? He's either incompetent or ripping you off. Do you have a detailed invoice ?

Seriously I can't remember (my brain has exploded with all this reinstalling stuff on my harddrive) what made me reboot my computer last week, but after rebooting it came up with error on a blue background - followed the instructions, it rebooted and then turn computer off . my computer guy built me this new computer a few months ago. I have not downloaded any new software - the only new thing was i started using microsoft edge browser. Had been using firefox but found it had started to not show photos, pics etc on FB, was often getting blank pages, but fb was ok on google chrome - I had stopped using chrome a while ago when it wouldn't allow me to play some games. Thought my flatmate uses chrome when he goes online in my computer.
I really am not worried about paying for new harddrive - its the virus i am worried about and how to make sure my pc is clean

post a link to this blog site maybe...

Seems odd, this deleting the OS thing, it might have been so borked and unstable that the tech decided it wasn't worth saving. The blue screen error is usually the clue as to what is going on with windows, it means windows didn't handle something well and stopped itself.

It may have been a crypto virus variety that encrypts a whole bunch of files on the system including all user data, but it wouldn't normally break the system.

Wordfence is a malware protection for wordpress websites so it might be blocking your ip/system based on your previously infected systems behaviours

Vote for Eset Nod32 AV as well

I sent a message to The Standard - and it was them that suggested the Kaspersky. Can't send link as it won't let me in.

This is unlikely to have been from any virus. The blue screen usually happens when theres a serious error with the physical hardware on a computer, (dying hard drive/ram/ etc). Or a big problem with system Drivers can also get you a blue screen. If your computer guy built you a new computer a few months ago and YOU don't go to dodgy sites then you should take a hard look at what the flatmate is doing. And you DON'T have to replace the hard drive to get rid of a virus.

.

Eset is the best antivirus program. But as I say if you are not doing anything dodgy then my best guess is the flatmate is the problem.

flat mate only looks at Google maps and real estate. I know as I can see in history where he goes. So not him. I use it for fb, Twitter, news sites, duckduckgo searches, Netflix, tv on demand, parliament, games.

I repeat - do you have a detailed invoice from the tech ?
How long after getting this 'new' computer did the problems start ?
Are you aware it's easy enough to selectively delete history items ?

my flatmate has no idea about deleting history. he is totally computer illiterate.

My concern is Malwarebytes is blocking 'outbound' trojans/malware etc from internet explorer

Could you either provide screen shots or a copy of the most recent Malwarebytes logfile showing these issues ?

Or simply some EXACT word-for-word text of the Malwarebytes block dialouges you've been getting.

And what do i do with the free trial from malwarebytes while this one is running? Do leave it to run too?

It's generally best to only have one antivirus program live on your system at one time

That address is for what appears to be a document repository for an indonesian university.

i would also run this cleaner through - it checks the browsers out in case of dodgy extensions etc

Can someone give me a link to the correct Eset Nod32 anti virus security suite please - do you think this would be better than Malwarebytes premium?

Malwarebytes is more targeted towards - Malware - lol.
Eset is the best Antivirus solution.
You purchase eset and keep using the trial/free version of malwarebytes on occasion should you wish.

oh and you can find eset nz by typing

eset nz into google.

if you're a bit of the overly cautious type go with the Advanced - if you're reasonably IT savvy, the essential AV only is probably all you need

I have always used Norton and though not liked by everyone it has never failed me. Malwarebytes I deleted because it kept urging me to buy and that is not what I wanted. Ccleaner has also lost its appeal since being bought out. And yes I avoid dodgy sites.

bryshaw - 2021-09-23 13:32:00

Ccleaner is not any kind of antivirus or anti malware program. As for Norton. You couldn't pay me to install any Norton A/v onto a computer I owned and I've never recommended it to anyone else.

It is easy when you decide when to renew, not them. I have always found them willing to 'negotiate' a subscription price. It is the perennial argument with anti virus, just like the Apple and Samsung mobile preferences.

the number of people I've seen with $300+ charges to their credit card because they went with default choices on nortons website. 5 devices, platinum protection, 3 years, etc. Meanwhile a better product like ESET NOD32 is around $60 a year.
