Replacing iPad battery

#Post

Anyone tried this? It will cost $400+ at Apple but the cost of the battery is a mere $25.

You have a quote?

I imagine the $25 battery is a cheapie, not an original apple...

Daughter had this issue with her ipad.
She decided that rather than spend that much on an "old" ipad, it would be better to update.

That's the thing.

What model of ipad is it ?
Who gave you those prices?

Yes, exactly but aren’t we supposed to be just a little bit green?
The price of $400+ was quoted directly from Apple today after they did a remote diagnostic.

How old is the ipad? I have a 6yr old version still going strong, so wondering how long it's got

iPad version 5, new at 2017. Diagnostics run, battery had it. No battery health indicator like the iPhone. Apple tech reckoned I could replace battery extending the life for about 2 years when the IOS software update about 15.0 will be released making it obsolete.
What I’d like to know has anyone replaced a battery in their iPad and if so was it a straightforward job. TY.

Gee $400 !! I just googled Apple NZ and they talk about $175.00 for the supply and fitting of a replacement battery for an ipad out of warranty and no "Apple Care" service contract..
It may just be worth double checking on the price !!

There are untold video on YourTube that take you through the DIY battery replacement.. It looks quite "brutal" in that you have to force it open to overcome the glue that holds it together.. I'm tech savy to be able to do it, but would I want to do it..perhaps not, for a couple of hundred bunks I'll leave it to someone who has done it before and can at least give me a warranty on their workmanship !!

Yeah I didn't bother googling prices but $400 seems steep

they are absolutepricks of things to take apart, just tried it with an iphone 7. Battery was $25. ribbon cable was so fragile it partly ripped, while prizing the glued screen from the back. I think I also might have damaged the volume control while prizing the glued down battery from the back of the case.
Apple products are shit to work on. I had already replaced the phone, because I suspected it was either not worth fixing or was shit to pull apart.

The battery health said 85%. however after being factory reset, and fully charged was empty in 4 hours (old battery).

Putting apart outright failure that depends in large part on the charge discharge cycle it has had and at what point you consider the remaining capacity insufficient. Use it till you can't but yes 6 years is getting up there.

Buy a battery online, and fit it yourself or get someone else to do it, host of YouTube videos on how to do it. "It's not rocket surgery".

I've done a couple with a 50% success rate. If you've never done something like this before there's a non-zero chance you'll break something.

On my first one I broke the wifi antenna connection so badly that it never worked again even with a new antenna module and some attempts at board-level repairs on the connector.

But if it's not working anyway you really have nothing to lose other than the price of the battery, and probably some tools, and it's a fun exercise. I see iFixit rate this as "very difficult" so I don't feel so bad about breaking one.

I looked at the 111 steps in the article and thought to myself someone has no clue what he was talking about...
