Monitor, No Signal

#Post
1

Hi All, Just a question here regarding hooking up a PC and laptop (For larger screen) to a Monitor, I have a 32" monitor I am trying to use I have tried VGA and HDMI cables (Where possible) on the desktops and Laptops, The screen keeps saying 'No Signal', I have bought a couple of new cables and even tried a smaller monitor that comes up with the same 'No signal", What is going on, What am I doing wrong, Is there an anomoly in the space/time continuim in that room, Really cant figure it out, Thanks

just plugging it in isnt' necessarily all you need to do. Assuming you're using Win 10:

Hmmm... mine works with a VGA cable.. the screen needs it's own power..
only time it comes up with "no signal" is when the computer is off.

Sorry, Should have said, The OP is Win 7(am going to update to 10 soon) and the monitor is pligged in, and laptop and monitor is running

Its impossible to tell from your question which of your systems is the problem, the PC or the laptop, or is it both?

Is the monitor set to the right input?

Have you enable multi screen on the PC/Laptop?

Go into display settings and check if it is showing up there.

With PCs some motherboards have onboard graphics and if you also have a graphics card you may be connecting the cable to the wrong port on PC.
Laptop, you need to change settings so it uses the external monitor....

Might have to enable duel screen in BIOS of desktop.

check in device manager that proper graphics drivers are installed. Pretty sure MS basic display driver won't support multiple monitors

Usually pretty plug and play monitors are, have been so for probably 20 years.

The graphics or display driver is for the display adaptor, the graphics card. Not the monitor.

Still don't know if its just the laptop or the PC or both, no reply. The answer to that question leads to very different possible resolutions of the problem.

Yes I agree, but usually you can just plug in any monitor and it will just work. It will just use a generic driver if it doesn't have your specific monitor.

Probably just need to go into "display settings" or similar and ensure if it is enabled.

The point is, your reply at #14 is nonsensical in that it has no relevance or bearing on what you were replying to.

King1s post is correct, your reply to it is an unrelated irrelevance, noise that only confuses the issue.

So you would dispute that one can typically just plug a monitor into a laptop and it just works, no need to go searching out for drivers.

Drivers for what? your post was in regard to pnp monitors, the thing you replied to was in regard to graphics adaptors.

Would I assume that the laptop has the correct display adaptor driver installed as you seem to be? No, I would not make that spurious assumption.

It is frequently the case that the correct driver is NOT automatically installed and the system instead defaults to using the generic MS basic display driver as stated. This is often the case with laptops and their less common mobility chip ID's

None of which of course has anything to do with your pnp monitor red herring.

Yes, there are certainly scenarios (some older win 7 devices upgraded to 10 for instance) where windows does not find suitable graphics drivers automagically and will utilise inbuilt basic drivers instead. In most cases the user would not really notice any difference until they try gaming or multiple screens etc

OP - while the others enjoy their sparing, can you clarify please. You mention that you've tried VGA & HDMI. If both the Display, and the Laptop have a VGA port, they will be several years old. You also mention "Desktops", does this mean you have a Laptop and also a Desktop PC? Can you confirm the exact models of the Laptop, the Desktop (if there is one) and the Display? Some Displays may not automatically switch inputs and you may need to specify which port has the incoming signal. If you do indeed have a Desktop PC, is there more than one port you can connect to? - ie, most Desktop PC's have a built-in Display connector, which could be any of VGA, DVI, or HDMI. But if you also have a separate graphics adapter installed, the onboard ports will likely be disabled and you can only use the adapter ports. As you can tell, there are a heap of unknowns here and a bit of terminology confusion so more info definitely required. If you could post photos of the various items and ports to the photoserver it would likely help to make sense of it

I promise I won't dump'n'run. I start work from home on Monday and have just set up a second monitor to my laptop. At work we run two screens. Everything is working, ........but the monitor has a box with Input Not Support circulating on it. Can it be fixed or should I steal a new monitor from work when go and get my allotted assignment.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15 3000, a basic one I grabbed from Noel Leeming (I don't need anything with all the bells and whistles). The monitor is an AOC which has had very little use even though it is probably closer to 10 years old than five.

I have used this to connect the monitor to the laptop.

right click desktop, display settings, multiple displays, detect.

then set resolution, try a low one like 1280x1024 to start

It seems to be doing what I need it to do other than the annoying message roving around the monitor. I am used to my two monitors side by side may take awhile to get used to the monitor being above the laptop. I just don't really have the room to by side by side.

I did a bit of research some time ago to get the correct adapter. Things changed in life and I never went any further.

NO. That 'annoying message' means it's NOT getting a signal from the computer. If you UNplugged it from the computer you'd get the same message. Do you have a power supply for that monitor ?

I am using it. It is plugged into the mains and connected to my laptop by this:

It is doing what I need it to do other than the message being apita. I have dragged over what I need to be on the screen and when I open them they stay there.

When I start working from home the monitor will be used to bring up by working papers (mainly excel spreadsheets) to check off against my reports (in our accounting software) before I finalise anything.

Is the monitor a tv in disguise . Have my old laptop into the tv through an hdmi lead. TV has to be set to hdmi 1 in my case. Not that i'd know what to do if it decided not to work lol. Once in a while when something went wrong i think i had to tap FN key & whatever the key was that shows external screen, or showed two screens the when that came up i had to pick which one for external--been a while fingers crossed.

Definitely not a TV. It was purchased to replace one that died that was attached to an old PC that has since gone. Tried to get it to work a few years ago and couldn't. Got the correct lead and didn't go any further. Until now because I need to work from home.

As well as experimenting with the screen resolution, you could also try adjusting the refresh rate in the advanced display settings. Ideally you would also look up the specs for this monitor model to confirm supported resolutions and refresh rates...

failing that the message box is coming from the monitor itself so you may be able to disable it within its own menu...

Okay I now have no sound. I only have one place I can plug in the monitor, and it actually controls the sound. Not too worried at the moment. Will just disconnect if the daughter sends anymore videos of her biarch bird lol.

Our IT guys have to set me up remotely so I can access my work computer and files. And most importantly my timesheet.

I'll give my tuppence then. Your photo shows the adapter has a DC 5volt USB input - you'll likely have a few suitable cables lying about. I'd plug one in and see what happens.

Another of your photos shows the extended monitor displaying something (Explorer, I think), but with a black box saying "No Signal". My opinion on this is that your external monitor is showing TWO inputs (picture-in-picture) at the same time. Make sure you are only using ONE input. This monitor I'm using can take two inputs, but I'm only using HDMI and when I try to use the monitor settings buttons to turn on the second input I can't, the error is "Cannot be used. Available in D-SUB signal only" - ie; the VGA kind of cable. In other words, make sure you're not using both the HDMI and VGA inputs on the monitor, unplug one or the other.

The monitor is displaying Chrome. It only has two outlets? on the back, one for the power and the other for the cable to the (at the moment) laptop. The end of the cable that goes into the monitor has one of those blue screw in connections. I have another cable that has on the bag HDTV to VGA. Just to confuse things more the white end that is plugged in is VGA not HDMI.

My bad I think I have had a senior moment. It probably is HDMI. It looks the same as the end on the HDTV to VGA lead. I crunch numbers the old fashion way and I no longer have a teenager in the house to help me, other than the dog and she spends most of her time sleeping (just like some teenagers).

The measure actually means it not getting a signal it can lock to, either from absence or wrong type of signal.

Not necessarily no signal at all.

Hmmm thinking, extend IS what you need.

Have a look at this

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-connect-and-set-multiple-
monitors-windows-10

How to rearrange multiple displays on Windows 10:

Do you see both monitors in the graphic? what did "detect" tell you?

If you don't see the image of the two displays, scroll down and find the "Detect" button at the bottom of the "Display" window.
