What would be a good soldering iron for someone who has not soldered at all and what wattage to get

It depends on if you want to do fine work or big jobs like large cables. For fine work get a low wattage iron with a fine tip. Look at the Jaycar selection in your local New Lynn store

It isn't hard to learn how to use but it pays to practice so you get a neat flat finish.

They are quite useful tools too for other things, like heating wires and melting holes in plastic.

Hi I would not recommend trying to solder a battery it could blow up and cause serious burns to you.
I wouldn't even do it and I'm experienced in soldering.
By the time you buy the solder and iron you could of brought a new shaver and possibly saved yourself a whole lot of pain.

I know how to solder. I tried to replace the battery (philishave) once, the whole lot ended in the tip.

I wanted to replace the battery in my Holden remote but the existing battery had spot welded terminals so I decided to solder these onto the new battery.

I didn't get the alignment correct so heated it up again to move the terminal and BANG! I couldn't find any part of the battery and should have been wearing eye protection.

edit: if you're going to do soldering where there's a risk of melting nearby plastic or overheating components, I'd recommend something like a Weller soldering gun with 100/120+ watts that heats up instantly and hot, so that you minimise the time the iron is on the work.

I've soldered to heaps of batteries, it isn't an issue as long as your iron is good and hot and you are quick.

Put solder on the wire and on the battery before trying to attach the wire to the battery.

I know from experience that the best tool for open joins is a small blue flame cigarette lighter. The lighters are about $8 from most budget shops and dual wall heat shrink $5 per M.

Not really a weld spark will pop one it is just a pop not really an explosion.

If your battery has tabs on it already a 20 to 30 watt iron with a fine tip is all you will need. I solder batteries in on an almost daily basis, never had one blow up in 40 years of doing it. Mostly I'm soldering in batteries that already have tabs on them. As tygertung says you need to prepare by pre tinning both parts you are joining together. If they are Lithium batteries it's probably a better idea for you to leave it to someone in the game to do for you.

One would wish to pre tin lithium batteries and be quick about applying the heat.
