Cumulative updates keep failing

#Post
1

After my hard drive spat the dummy and ceased to exist, i had it replaced. Since getting it back I notice several cumulative updates download but cant install them. Get to 100% install then error message. Running win10 and seems to be only the quality updates.
Error message is; An error occurred while performing the update.

Can anyone shed light on this issue and if I can solve it.
Tried the installer of harddrive but no luck as yet.
Will give any advice a go but not overly tech speak capable. Thanks

Yes that is the one. The tech guy downloaded it on the 1/07/21 and I haven't been able to download certain updates since.
I have been able to download some updates that go into the "Other updates" drop box
Kb 5004237, Kb 5005033 both failed. Some have failed and then they no longer appear available to download. I have paused updates as we are rural and on limited Gb.
Have tried with security off and have googled but having no luck. Thanks

Run disk cleanup on the drive, (right-click on C:) and select properties, then "Disk Cleanup". Personally, I tick all the entries, but you can just go with the defaults if you prefer. Let it do its thing and when finished do a complete shutdown (power off) and try again. If still no go, do the same thing but this time click the option for "Clean up system files". It may just be all that's needed. Or, if your're nervous about that, go back to the dude (or dudette) and let he/she/them/they take another look

They seem to be missing in action and not returning messages. Will give that a go and thanks for the reply.

Note that in the "Clean up system files" option, there is specifically "Windows Update Clean-up", probably at the top of the list. Definitely make sure that one is selected

Yes done and no change.
I did do a sfc scan and a restore health check which found some corrupt files and restored them.
Trying to update atm.

Have you tried uninstalling dot net framework 3.5 ?

What about repairing windows ?
run (from an administrator powershell)
sfc /scannow

followed by
dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

and if it finds issues
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

I am willing to give most things a go and like to do my best at trying to fix things and I am learning a lot. Have tried all but the first one but when I first searched the error code it said to try turning win 3.5 and the next in line off (cant remember the number 4.)? Not sure if that is the same thing as you suggest.
Then let windows look for the missing files and download them.
Restore health thing did its thing and found corrupt files and fixed them 100% complete but still keeps refusing the quality updates.
Appreciate the advice, thanks

if this is a relatively new install I would be inclined to sit back and wait a couple of months. Often updates require prerequisites which may not always be available, other times it will try to install an update and pretty much decide its not needed. I've seen the odd one fail to install month after month, then eventually install months later

When I last installed Windows (when I get a new primary Samsung 980 Pro SSD) I had this same thing with the new Windows install too - same sort of issues around .net framework. I tried all fixes that I could think of and found online but couldn't resolve it.

I ended up creating a new USB installer and just doing another clean install of Windows 10 and have since upgraded to Windows 11. There have been no issues since I did this. This all happened 2 or 3 months back.

Yeah well an refresh of the install wouldn't take much Effort or time.

Hard drive was fried apparently and new one fitted on 1/07, they couldn't clone the old one so new install of windows.
Will try and get in touch with installer again. Thanks for tips and help. Much appreciated.

to find .net
right click start go to "apps & features"
Click Optional features right at the bottom, "more Windows Features"
At the top you will see .NET 3.5
Unless you have some older app installed that need it,then you can simply untick the check box and hit ok.

You can also put it back the same way if you have to.

If no luck there,
Try using the update assistant
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can refresh windows from that.

I haven't installed 10, but even 7 takes less than 20 minutes on an ancient laptop.

Just do a refresh. It'll take an hour at most and may fix the problem. Choose the 'keep your files' option.
