What a waste of money, telling us what we already know. I'm sure the cost of this could build a few new houses.

If only there was a capital gains tax.
Imagine how cheap and plentiful houses would be.
Yeah, right.

I wonder if it will point out that the 1500 refuges that come in gets homes given to them. They jump ahead of New Zealanders

What a waste of time and money. We all know what the reasons are, years of neglect by successive govts, land not being made available, too much immigration, too much incentive for property speculators/investors and basically pure unadulterated GREED from certain sectors.

With rates bill, received a leaflet stating that 95,000 houses (5% of total, at Census 2018)) are empty. emptyhomes.co.nz asks owners to complete a survey and seeks ways to reintroduce house into the supply.

Given that the government makes letting so unattractive, and crap tenants compound the problem, there seems little incentive to do so.

I think the whole "empty houses" is misleading and a red herring. Look at the locations and many are in holiday areas, so they are second homes. Are we really going to go after the family bach or holiday home? The remainder included homes that were being renovated, homes between tenancies etc

However, I note that that survey is funded by HUD so clearly its an attempt to understand the problem, assuming they get a decent response.

The commission will investigate and write its report.. meanwhile young Billy and his mum will still be living in a Toyota under a bridge !!!
You can bet if the commission sends people from overseas to investigate, they will not be "shoved" into a little motel room in the suburbs.. it will be the Hyatt or similar for them !!
