are these windows 10 updates "really" important?

#Post
1

i was just getting used to the layout and then it said it needed to update. it said your computer may start several times or something, which it did. when it finished i had a completely different task bar down the bottom again, and the windows explorer icon had gone. and i have a little weather icon and in place of the explorer icon i have a little blue 3/4 circle which is edge or something. will it keep changing with every update? i think that was the problem with my other one. so i turned off the updates in the end cause they had problem installing. is that edge ok for the man to use since he seemed to like the internet explorer so much.? i mean he must know i can see and delete his history if i want to. or does he?? lol.

Internet explorer is now end of life as far as Microsoft are concerned and you are better off using Edge as it's more modern and safer. You can't really turn updates of in Win10 without some trickery, and I wouldn't recommend you did that.

I never updated Windows. Never had problems or malware either.
I did use 3rd party antivirus, and a LOT of common sense.
Your choice, really, what browser you use. Chrome, Firefox, Edge or one of the based ons....
Although MS will try to force you back to their own.

Op that superficial interface twiddling or its avoidance is not what you should be updating for, that is merely the wanted/unwanted cherry on the top to be discarded as you see fit. Its the giant iceberg below the surface of security patches that you don't see that you most definitely do want to be updating for.

Leave it out if date at your daily increasing peril.

If the laptop is windows then it won't be able to use Google play store apps as these are Android.

What make model is it ? And what operating system does it run? Windows ? Or?

Most things can to some extent be updated but it really depends on what you have to start with as to whether it's practical and worthwhile or not.

Ok it's possibly ok to upgrade to win 10.

You say it's starting to slow down. Computers don't slow down as they age like we do theres always reasons. What you have to figure out is how much are you willing to spend on it. And as I said it will not be able to use Apps from the Google Android play store.

Probably on the underneath it'll have a sticker or similar staying the model what is it?

i looked for the little sticker but theres nothing there. thats ok. i like the google play store event though im not buying anything off it. but i did download a foreign language app, so that was cool. thats why id like the apps on the laptop then i can sit in my chair with my funny back and have a pillow behind me and learn it, rather than in the chair in the computer room.

Windows computers CANNOT run apps from Google play store.

You might be getting mixed up with the windows app store.

Missed the most important bits

CPU type & laptop model.
It's the part that is named "Processor"

What you have listed should be ok on a basic computer usage but the other part is far more important

That's why I asked for the info off the sticker. There is ALWAYS info on the back or bottom of the machine.

Your system will generally update drivers by itself if needed. But if the WinZip program seems to be working for you it's probably not doing any harm. Personally I just don't trust WinZip as for many years they sold the WinZip program to people so that the people people unzip files - they never mentioned that this function was already built in to Windows.

Your post prompted me to check my new hp laptop and I had to look really hard to find the miniscule information on the back.. In fact, it's soooo tiny I had a to make a photo of it so I could enlarge that to read the info!

Hp does not support windows 10 upgrade of the g6 pavillion. Doesn't mean it can't be done though. Probably not worth spending any money on it though.

Short term worth upgrading to win10 but only as a fresh install
Longer term usage needs an SSD hardrive swap + 8gb ram + fresh install of win10

And at the cost for a tech to do it - not worth it.
