Who would be dumb enough to pay $8M for a $3M motel?
Oh, that’s right….Us the taxpayers.

HNZ have been blowing private buyers away for many years now. Houses, units, etc - all out bid by taxpayers dollars. Way over full price - no problem.

if I was a homeowner or motelier in the area who does not house homeless], I would be getting a group together and form a class action and sue the government for the loss of value to their properties.

As for these lies by some in council who perpetually claim they are locals? What a joke. These are people from auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and even gisborne can you believe it. Today I heard that some were given bus tickets and money and shipped off to tokoroa.

I grew up in Rotorua and as I said MANY TIMES we never had homeless people here until the last 5-7 years. Remember this?

I wonder if they are up to current rental standard requirements - ..... oh that's right, short term 'visitor' accommodation comes under a different set of standards which isn't as stringent.

The money KO is spending at the moment is ludicous. Our local party house has just had a new driveway, new fence, new deck and is now being repainted. It really is a kick in the guts to those around who have sleepless nights but still have to get up to go to work in the morning to see these a/h who have no respect for the property or the neighbours get all this done when they just trash the place every weekend.

Site will be redeveloped into (a lot of) new public housing one day it is said. There goes the neighbourhood.

And yes I know not all public housing tenants are ratbags, but doesn't need to be many.

Got to wonder who the competing buyers were, or if any existed.
No cost benefit analysis of whether it would be more cost effective to increase accommodation supplement so tenants could pay market rates.
If only I had a chain of motels to sell right now.

Not true. As a parent with young kids, it's about the best place to go. We went again last week for a short stay, and as always we left without being able to do everything on our list. I've booked a longer stay for next summer. It's such a fun place to go, blows the rest of the country out of the water when it comes to finding lots of things to do all so close together!

What many of us locals don’t want is the mass tourism that exploits our city and contributes little Eg those nasty white buses who are foreign owned, stay at foreign owned accommodation, eat at foreign owned restaurants, shop at foreign owned shops that open only for those buses all while using the water roads and waste disposal all the rest of us pay for.

One day in town I was waiting to pick someone up and saw a tardy looking restaurant I had never really noticed before and thought to myself who on the earth would ever eat at that run down establishment…..nek minnit one of those buses turned up and out they piled……

What valuation? Council? Or Market?
My mums CV is $410,000, done a year ago. Cheapest house similar here sold for $503,000 and it was a rotten dump, builders are in it now fixing it up. reroofed, gutted kitchen etc.
Market value on my mums says $600K, and I believe it.

In June 2017 the Government bought a beautiful Motel to house the homeless in Blenheim.
The desperate need for emergency housing has been seen around all of New Zealand and for many years.

The benefits of buying Motels are plentiful and varied...
# The price per unit is a lot cheaper than a new build.
# It has been built to high standards eg Fire cells, alarm systems, insulation, security cameras etc.
# It is already fully furnished with kitchenette and bathrooms.
# It is already operational with staff facilities, enough parking and established gardens.
# It is available right now.
# It is available to redevelop in the future.

The Blenheim Motel wasn’t in the middle of the Main Street with other Motels and hospitality businesses trying to keep operating though...

(I would have thought in Rotorua that they’d need to have a change of use from Council to stop operating as travellers accommodation).

I agree. Most people realise,
I think hopefully, that we are facing a housing crisis and that people need to be housed. The purchase of a motel for housing is not going to stop me visiting Rotorua.

Rumours of the demise of the tourist industry in Rotorua are exaggerated but will become a self fulfilling prophecy if people do not stop predicting this.

I also agree with the purchase of the motel. It has short and long term gains.
Social housing will be able to go ahead in the future (thus meeting the stipulations for higher density for homes close close to town/transport) and with 'eyes on' and that is a good thing .

It is the same perspective I have for where I do live.

I would rather have purpose built social housing close in to CBD where there are more people with eyes on. The housing of some in emergency housing that is not fit for purpose, in some case in Wgtn has been less than stellar. But that is not to condemn the whole concept.

Agreed - its going to be years before we're fully back to global tourism, we have a housing crisis and these motels are largely empty at the moment Makes sense to use them whilst KO catch up with building new stock. But some people just complain about that as well.

No excuse now not to work. All the unemployed all in one group at the motels, send the buses in and tell them they are picking kiwifruit and not sitting around on their backsides all day smoking and drinking while everyone else pays for it.

No excuses for not being able to get on the bus when it’s parked right outside.

yeah and planted a lot of trees…..which we harvested later and made a whole industry from until roger douglas ruined it.

No excuses now. If they are going to accept free housing they can damn well get off their backsides. I will be expecting our council and MPs to start organising the buses ASAP. I don’t want to hear people moaning they can’t get staff. It’s about time people cleaned themselves up and stop being such an f ing drain on everyone else.

People keep saying that because it was a very successful political slogan. But it is not true. State houses were mostly sold at a serious discount to community housing providers to house those on the waiting list, and some for redevelopment, or because there was no demand for the size / location or because uneconomic to repair. And some sold to tenants.

Believe it or not. But perhaps you are not aware that Housing NZ has been producing regular social housing waiting list reports for many years detailing demand for location and size. The demographics of the waiting list have changed dramatically over the years, and now the majority of applicants have no children and are waiting for a one bedroom place.

You think they should put one elderly person in a three bedroom house on a 1/4 acre section? That is where they were at. the demand for smaller dwellings exceeded supply. Selling a home on a quater acre section helped fund new builds. Removing old houses on 1/4 acre sections that didn't meet new health standards allowed for more intense housing, allowing five families to be housed in new warm healthy homes in an area that once only provided for two. Media didn't push those stories though and some people didn't bother to educate themselves on what was really happening.
