Jigsaw puzzles

My winter addiction, is keeping me entertained and amused on these gray days. I complete one every few days so second hand makes them budget friendly, but why oh why do people not mention the missing pieces? It is so frustrating to complete a real beauty only to find like a gap toothed grin, the finished image can never be really finished...

You could cut one out of cardboard and colour it in to finish the puzzle.

I feel your frustration. I am also a keen puzzler and glued them to keep. I recently found a 'pair' puzzle to one I had from ages ago.. but there was no mention of missing pieces and when I realised that about 6 were missing I was really gutted.

On my brand new jigsaw clock puzzle I was soo frustrated that pieces were missing! It took me a while, but I still had the box and one day realised I could cut out the picture on the box where the parts are missing. Glueing them behind the puzzle in the correct gap fills in the picture (almost).Good enough to not catch the eye.

I didn't feel like doing that for the six missing pieces in the other puzzle.

Even better: carefully strip the cover photo off the puzzle box and glue the matching area behind the missing puzzle hole.

Except, the picture is smaller than the finished puzzle, and the colours are different too. Boxes fade, their contents are usually much brighter tones. As for cutting out, I'm pretty good with a scalpel, but not that good, lol...

But it is all about the process, the zen of getting into the 'flow'. And I love those moments when I reach for a random piece my brain recognises as a fit before my eyes do, and it pops straight into place.

Clever pattern seeking apes that we are...

We get ours from the Hospice shop, they get ( I'm told ) local rest homes to do the puzzles first, and label them accordingly.

I give the incomplete ones - appropriately marked to show the gaps - to our local free street book library. The complete ones go to the op shop, who I'm told count the pieces rather than put them together again. Though the one I just won might be a glue candidate. It is gorgeous and should be a challenge...

more that two pieces missing go into the bin, nothing worse than doing a puzzle with pieces missing

Counting the pieces might not be accurate as there could be one or two each way - i mean there might be 999 or 1001 or 2 pieces. Or does the jigsaw cutting machine do it absolutely accurately? Probably does these days. Just a thought . . .

I wish we could make our own. I need a laser cutter. Preprogrammed. I can make the images, but I am useless at cutting!

i used to know someone that would make wreaths out of the incomplete puzzles. she would glue them so the backsides were showing, and then paint and decorate for xmas.

and addictive!

local library here does puzzle swaps. I've been getting ones from the op shop, if all the pieces are present I donate to the library. Ones with missing pieces get dumped, there are too many puzzles out there to inflict the pain of missing pieces on someone else!

My Oma always had a puzzle on the go, we had to put in a couple of pieces before we left :-)

I do them this way too, but still enjoy the actual cardboard pieces all over my table! My favourite site is jigsawexplorer.com.

Ahhh but that's like reading an ebook. You miss out on all the tactile pleasures of the real thing...

Like books, these puzzles are objects in themselves.

I love jigsaws too, but play them on my tablet as I have 4 cats. I use app Jigsaw puzzle by MobilityWare puzzle sizes go 4 to 1024 pieces and you can do them with rotation on (like normal jigsaw) or off. The 1024 piece ones take me days to complete????

I am keen Puzzler as well, love doing the 1000 pieces.
Stopped buying from opp shop now as been too many bits missing ,last one had 7 missing.
I just threw that one in the bin after I had finished.

I buy mine here, and these days I ask if they are complete. Kind of puts sellers on the spot, but does save disappointment on receipt!

And yes, dealing with an attention seeking cat on the puzzle table can be a challenge. How do they know?

I too love jigsaws, mainly 1000 piece scenery. Our cockatiel sits on my knee and will pick outside pieces out of the puzzle if he thinks I am not watching.

I buy a lot of secondhand jigsaw puzzles from two of our local op shops because I know they are checked for completeness before they sell them

That’s true - I know for sure that Summerset “test” the puzzles so probably there are others too
