com surrogate??. my computer is running

#Post
1

REALLY SLOW. its a aoc desktop. when i looked in the task manager page i saw four lines of com surrogate thingy and one of them is using 95 %memory. i try and end the task but it just keeps coming back and im sure thats whats stopping pages to load. its insane. pages just freeze up. i printed out 6 pages to try and learn how to get rid of itand i got up to page five to the trusted installer bit where it said to uncheck the allow boxes, but that ws all greyed out and it wouldnt let me uncheck them. so im fk#d. i dont know what else to do, bar get a professional in. some of the google suggestions are very daunting, and i thought i was brave enough to try this one. but it didnt work. how the hell do i get rid of it please.

I have two com surrogate processes running they're using 0% cpu and less than 2Mb of memory between the two of them. Theres a possibility that if you have several and they're hogging the cpu/ram then it may be a sign they're being used as part of a virus:

" If you see a large number of dllhost.exe processes running and they’re using a noticeable amount of CPU, that could indicate the COM Surrogate process is being abused by a virus or other malicious application"

What A/v program do you have ?

before i turned it off at the wall, i just went to the right hand side where the menu is and i clicked on restart. but even that was a mission. the start up box just didn't want to appear. i didnt have any antivurus. only windows defender. but i just installed a free "total av" one, which i know is going to ask me for money probably. all i wanted was a free basic one.

i just clicked on task manager again and it said 51% for cpu and 91% for memory.

katybaty - 2021-07-14 15:05:00

and when i go to task manager there is no dll thingy. only that com surrogate. and thers *expletive* four of them.

Ok so far so good. Do NOT pay money.
You could restart the computer in 'safe mode with networking'. And that will enable you to get online and get some sort of malware scanner program. Gimme a couple mins and I"ll post some more info.

https://data-cdn.mbamupdates.com/web/mb4-setup-consumer/MBSe
tup.exe

You can run this one for free and it's a very good, well respected antimalware program. Download it/run it, (in safe mode if you have to), and trust what it tells you. Let it remove anything it finds. Let us know how you get on.

When you run the install use the 'custom' install and don't bother installing their browser when it suggests you do - just clik 'skip' on that one.

i cant do it. i just cant do it. im ready to break and just take a hammer to the fkn thing. i downloaded that thing u said nice lady and all those dozens of pop up boxes came up to the right saying website blocked due to trojan. and the files all said the same thing. file. c/windows/syswow64/dllhost.exe-
. then the pop ups quickly disappear. i restarted the computer when it told me to, but even now when i go to task manager the com thing is taking up space and i cant end it. and there are still pop ups popping up as i speak, telling me i have a trojan. and the malware site is not free. i read carefully and i couldnt find anywhere where it said it was free, so im on a free 'trial". i tried to write this message just b4 and the screen just froze. its ok at the moment, and its letting me type and iv just been to another website and that was ok,. but its just to beyond me now. i will walk away and look again 2night.

The malware site as you call it is indeed to all intents and purposes free to use anyway. Restart the computer in SAFE MODE you don't need to do 'safe mode with networking' in fact it's probably better if you ONLY use safe mode. Then run malwarebytes . It'll run MUCH better and have a much better chance of getting rid of the problem.

Click the Windows-button → Power.
Hold down the shift key and click Restart.
Click the option Troubleshoot and then Advanced options.
Go to “Advanced options” and click Start-up Settings.
Under “Start-up Settings” click Restart.
Various boot options are displayed

also familiarise yourself with what other security / AV software you have eg Norton, AVG, Mcafee, Trend, Eset etc ... Having more than one can cause slow computers and non-functional security / AV software.

In this case I would take it offline and/or safemode, then uninstall all security / AV software, then load up malwarebytes and scan as per nice_lady suggestion

after malware is removed it might need a system file check - SFC /scannow from a command prompt

here is the eset online scanner link
https://www.eset.com/nz/home/online-scanner/

should be able to run this from safemode with networking, which I would suggest, since it seems like you have a decent dose of something in there

Agree, I'd suggest 'ordinary' safe mode to run malwarebytes first then reboot into safe mode with networking to run the Eset scanner.

sorry. this safe mode thing, I don't know how to get it. and im using internet exporer at the moment cause chrome wont even load. Turn the computer off . Then;

Press the start button. Give it about 8 seconds then press and hold the start button until it shuts off. Do this three times then on the 4th don't shut it off. That should get you into the advanced menu.

From that you can find advanced startup options. Including safe mode.

well that malware site is doing weird things. i was doing a scan and it said no threats found, yet about 5 pop up boxes came up to the right saying i had a trojan and found malware and each different box had a different ip address. and my windows defender wont work with another anti virus thing apparently. so i uninstalled mal ware bytes for now and my windows defender got turneed back on and i did a scan and it said it found malware and removed it. and it went into quarantine then i removed it from there. so another question really, is windows defender just as good as removing malware or do i still need something like the malwarebytes thing. and why did the malware bytes thing say i had no threats, yet all these pop up boxes popped up to the right saying i had a threat. then they disappear quickly.

just finished the scan. it took 2 and a half hours. it said unresolved detections 0, and resolved detections 1. and it scanned 303310 files.

also try this one
https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewdownload/1-adwcleaner/

same company as malwarebytes, but this one targets browsers amongst other stuff, much quicker scan. Useful since web browsers eg Chrome give websites the ability to provide user notifications in the bottom right corner - as usual it gets horribly abused by certain less reputable entities

well, its well and truly f$$$d now. in my wisdom i thought id try and do a windows update, which i havnt done for a while. it downloaded 6. it went to install 6. it then restarted by itself. then i walked away, and i have a green screen saying "please wait", and the little circle is going round AND bleeping round. and i cant shut it down casue theres no option to the right. so i googled. none of the suggestions work, ie turn off power , hold certain buttons etc. i managed to get to the hp start up screen( my mistake, my computer is a hp, not aoc.) all hard drives, disks? says they are ok. but as soon as i exited out of that page hat bleeping green screen come up again. and it wont bleeping go AWAY. and i turned it off at the wall, went and fed the chooks, came back, turned it on again, and that bleeping screen still saying please wait. f, f it. im over it. why why why did i do that stupid update. at least i could get somethin, even though it was slow.. so iv got the laptop and tablet at the moment but im just waiting for that to f out now. see technology. they f u with the cell phones.

Be patient with it, they take as long as they take and tempting as it may be to pull the plug, it doesn't usually help the cause.
What is the green screen you are referring to that won't go away? anything written on it to identify it

I might also suggest checking the HDDs are ok when you get it up and running - standard version

Techs have no interest in whatever 'private info' you might have. They wouldn't be in business long if they started poking around where they shouldn't . Hubby seen all sorts and he said the only thing he would ever have reported would be child porn. You don't get to see anything anyway it takes enough concentration and expertise to repair problems without being side tracked by peoples photos or any other crap.

And yes it's safe to leave the computer running for days/weeks/months many businesses very rarely turn them off.

that's perfectly normal then, it is in fact the update in progress - just need to sit back and wait...
