This PC Can't Run Windows 11

#Post
1

Did a check to see if I could run W11 but got this message:-
"The PC must support Secure Boot. While this PC doesn't meet the system requirements to run Windows 11, you'll keep getting W 10 updates.
How do I fix it?
My MB is - GA-AB350M-G3

You'll be fine. Just ignore Win11

Is Windows 11 a scam from the hardware manufacturers to sell new hardware?

Because the hardware has been so fast for so long, even an older PC now runs pretty well.

The required specs are pretty low so I'd say - No.

There is an option in the bios/uefi, could be under secureboot or csm mode, or iirc sometimes there is both.
CSM=Compatibility Support Module, enabled is the legacy mode...
All i can say is your board does support secureboot but maybe its not turned on and 11 enforces it...

You could say all the windows versions, and updates, are.
Makes him money.

And the updates, who ever got protected by an update, most of it is caused by carelessness or downright stupidity. (Waikato DHB).

Run Linux, it will handle new PCs or ancient ones, it doesn't care.
The code is small, neat and bloat free.

No need for antivirus, you can even sandbox it easily if really paranoid,(easily), it's all gui these days, no need to know any code...

And it's FREE. And so are all the programs.

The only negative? Not so great if you're into high end gaming. Note I said high end, you can run solitaires, minecraft and all that sort of stuff.

Easily, it will even install and configure wine for you.

Except for the TPM 2.0 requirement. That essentially means you need a 6th gen or newer Intel CPU (or Ryzen I think)

Yeah I do run Linux primarily, and a lot of higher end gaming will run on Linux now. The kernel has got quite big now, but still a lot smaller than Windows. It runs a lot faster than 10, but I have noticed that Windows 7 boots a lot faster on my studio machine, although if I dare say if I was running a Linux distro from 2009 it would boot turbo fast as well.

Did a PC health check
Managed to change from BIOS to UEFI, then enabled TPM 2.0 BUT now told my RYZEN 5 1600 isn't supported!! Like vtecintegra said

Take a look when you download some program, MBs not GBs.
Those were the days...oh hang on, now is still the days...

Skylake and Kabylake aren't supported, not till 8th gen.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/min
imum/supported/windows-11-supported-intel-processors

If I were a betting man id say its a decision that has its roots in the fallout from meltdown and spectre.

Remember that the fact that it "isn't supported" doesn't at all mean that it won't work.

That's for new OEM systems, the requirements for an upgrade on an existing system are different, the only real change from Windows 10 is the TPM requirement

Yeah the programmes are tiny, but I had trouble putting a system on a 1 GB drive a wee while ago, although have managed it with debian 9 and using a file system with compression.

This is the minimum requirements https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/windows-1

Like anything else it's subject to change

Yeah, I thought better of speculating about it at this point. Wait and see.
That goes to the same processor list btw.

Seems that my Gigabyte Z390 mobo needs a TPM module fitted.
There is a connector provided, but not the actual module.
Had a quick look at a few NZ computer suppliers and no modules available anyway.
There's a bit of 'scalping' for these modules going on overseas already.
A $US19 module becomes $NZ100+.
Anyone know of where in NZ I could source one of these modules (at the right price)?

Module needed is GC-TPM2.0_S, but can't find that in NZ (well, Google can't find it for me).

You'll find there is a built in TPM in your MB. Go into BIOS and you'll see it in the Peripherals tab.

Trusted Computing
Enables or disables Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
I enabled mine yesterday. Google it to check it out. No need to buy a plug-in TPM but you're right, with this new W11 requirements there's bound to be scalping.
I had to change my booting from Legacy BIOS to UEFI, too.......then got the message my CPU wasn't on the go list!

Yes, thanks fishb8...done and did.
Seems to be happy now when I 'Run' tpm.msc

So your CPU must be newer than my 2017 Ryzen 5 1600........which is still pretty good....but not to MS!!????

It's about 18 months old now.
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700F CPU @ 3.00GHz
Described as "Intel Coffee Lake Core i7 9700F 8 Core 3.0Ghz 12MB Cache, LGA 1151 8 Core/ 8 Threads, No Integrated Graphics".

I have installed Windows 11 on an 8 year old AIO desktop running an i3-3120M CPU all seems to be running fine, after the install I ran the PC health check and it stated the CPU isn't supported ha what a laugh, seems like a scum for people to ditch older PC's for nothing.

"Not supported" doesn't mean "won't work" and never has.

MS wanted secure boot & TPM with windows 10. It prevents any other OS being easily installed. There was an outcry, from PC enthusiasts & the linux community.
I found the comments in this article interesting...
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-11-w
ont-work-without-a-tpm-what-you-need-to-know/

Only the default installer requires TPM & Secureboot. you can deploy windows 11 to any hardware using other methods. SO the OS itself does not require those hardware features.

I was already on the Insider Program - Release Preview and not eligible for a W11 install because of my processor, nor for the Beta Channel so switched to the Developer channel yesterday arvo. Got 2 updates yesterday then this morning Installed W11.
Still very early days.
Watching Euros football and using my laptop (which will be stuck on W10 for the next few years).
The start/programs is a bit hard to find but will work it out.

fishb8 - 2021-06-29 07:42:00

Shouldn't really too hard to find, maybe Microsoft made a UI error.

You cannot have "secure boot" on a MBR partitioned disc on Windows 10... that's my understanding.
You have to convert from MBR to GPT partition format. How to do that is explained very well on this link... https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/mbr-to-g
pt

I'm still running 3.11 - every now and then it tells me to open the window I think to get some fresh air in for the compoota. Seems fine.

I've always used Classic Shell to give me the old W7 view of programs but isn't working on W11 so will have to either get used to it or find a fix.
Might still have to fit a newer CPU. Don't know how easy to replace on a 3 y/o system.
