You don't need a driver. Plug the phone into a USB port on the computer. Select Transfer Media Files on the phone. Open File Explorer on the lappy, find the phone, copy off the appropriate files.

No driver needed. Why do you think you need one ?

Hi kevlight, couple of options:

1. can you put an SD card into the phone and transfer the photos on to that? Samsung's own file system kind of works, and there are a couple of free generic ones you can use too. You then put the card into another device to get the photos off that way.

2. Alternatively, one of the usb memory sticks that has a standard usb one end and an android usb the other end. use the android end to go into the phone, transfer photos, remove memory stick. then, you put the standrd usb end into the computer to get the photos off the stick.

As per post #8 - did you do this?

You could try plugging the phone into laptop going to device manager see if there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the phone driver and try automatically updating the driver.

They do have a driver but they usually just automatically connect up without any dramas.

I would also try a different cable from laptop to phone.

Some fixes you could also try...

I find it very difficult to comprehend that a Win 10 computer would need drivers installed for a new model Samsung.

If the OP would bother to come back and state whether they did indeed do what post #8 suggested. Or, otherwise, their exact method.....

Trying a different cable is a good idea . Trying the phone on a different computer is also.

Haha post #8 didn't suggested nothing. But yes, I believe the OP has done nothing!

Not everything you plug in but I would expect a phone to need a driver. Even in win10. As I say usually the driver is loaded as quick as you can plug the device in, sometimes the computer is a bit slow and will say 'setting up a device' or words to that effect which it is finding and loading the driver as part of the setting up. Try it. Plug your phone in, wait for it to connect, and then go to the device manager, there you will see under 'portable devices' the phone driver.

muppet_slayer - 2021-06-14 17:39:00
19

Just tested my theory and sure enough I found my phone driver under 'portable devices' in the device manager. It may not name your phone there but be something like VFD 300, which was the name of my phone driver. I have a basic vodafone phone.

muppet_slayer - 2021-06-14 17:57:00

I don't know why the driver has failed on the OP's phone, but I bet it does have a driver problem why it hasn't connected.

muppet_slayer - 2021-06-14 18:01:00

Their laptop is windows 7. I wonder if that could be the problem with no new updates being made for that OS, and the phone being a fairly new phone.

muppet_slayer - 2021-06-14 18:03:00
22

of course hardware needs drivers. But theres no reason I could imagine why a Windows 10 installation would need the user to download a driver for a very common Samsung phone. That's ridiculous. We're way past ordinary users having to find and install drivers for such common devices.

I doubt the laptop needs a driver for that phone. I think maybe if the OP would come back and actually tell us what they're doing EXACTLY that might stop a lot of speculation. As I've already said I can't easily believe that Windows 10 wouldn't have a ready to go driver for such a make and model of phone.

Probably using a charging cable, not a data/charge

This! This! This!

Found that out with my J5 into my Win 10 laptop.

The cable that comes with the J5 is not a Data/Charge cable it is only a Charge cable.

Jeez that's pathetic of Samsung. I'd guess a data/charge cable could cost them 1c more than a simple charge cable ? I dunno but it's ridiculous really.

Yes totally agree and DUH I don't know what I was thinking writing the above posts. Of course windows 10 would have the driver for it. What about the driver base for windows 7, could windows 7 be the problem? Would be good if the OP came back with some answers, I am curious now. Sorry for misinterpreting your above posts nice_lady. Jumped the gun again LOL

Yeah dunno which version of Windoze they're using. However the possibility that the supplied cable is ONLY a charging cable is very high. What a dopey thing for Samsung to do. Bit of a trap for the unwary.

Windows should have everything built in because it is well programmed. There should be no driver required. I've never had to find a driver when plugging in a phone, even on Windows.

Okay sorry for delay in getting back to you ,the joys of shift work ! im using Windows 7. 64 bit .2.4 Ghz i5-2430M cpu ,
My previous Galaxy GT S7710 Andriod ver 4.1.2 was getting slow and would not use the tracer apps for Conv tracing or let me use apps for the MY Way shuttle bus.so I up dated ! to Galaxy J5 model SM J500Y Android ver 6.0.1
I like the J5 phone, bigger screen larger display faster more power etc etc but .it will not connect to the laptop, it will charge using one of my three different chargers around the house .. I can connect my older ph using my existing cable and even if i swap cables to different usb ones it makes no difference .no go ! is it possible the micro usb port on the ph has been damaged ? is there a simple way of checking that ?
i open tools . tap my files .. select the picture i want to send to the lap top tthen press share it shows a screen with selection of Gmail .nearby share .save to drive. blue tooth. wifi direct .memo email add to maps android beam messages ,
...But i still can not transfer files or pics to the laptop .
the laptop doesn't seem to recognize the J5 phone ,is there a J5 ph or Win 7 laptop driver missing, or am missing something obvious ?

kevlight - 2021-06-16 11:03:00

wifi bluetooth are nothing to do with plugging in cables.

Step 1: Plug cable into computer
2: Plug cable into phone
3: Look on phone for prompt which says 'use for charging' / 'enable file transfer' etc. You MUST tap on 'enable file transfer', (it might be slightly different wording), if you don't then you will NOT be able to 'see' the phone from the computer and transfer pics/files.

Step 4:

Yes, if the message doesn't come up on the phone, it won't work, even if you are using something other than windows.

Another option may be to Email the file to yourself and get it to the computer that way.
I had to do that before I realized that the cable i was using was not a data transfer cable

1. plug the phone into computer.
2. when the phone indicates it's charging slide down the top of the screen and you should have a 'transfer files by usb' option - UNLESS IT'S ONLY A CHARGING CABLE YOU ARE USING.

Im still here just done 4hrs at Mill ! ive managed to get the cell ph J5 Samsung model SM J500Y android version 6.0.1 wascupdated 20017. .To finally hand shake with my printer a Canon MG7560 i did this by installing Smart Switch on the cell .Also installed it on the Laptop a WIn 7 Professional service pack 1. It didnt make any difference. Ive just noticed that the Down loaded instructions for my J5 mention on page 88 that using XP must be service pack 3 or higher ..is this why the J5 will not connect ? although im using Win 7 ....

kevlight - 2021-06-18 16:00:00

Yeah, XP SP3 doesn't apply to 7.

tygertung - 2021-06-18 16:09:00

I finally got a result ! i took note of Gubay and the others, who suggested that i must be using a charging cable ,even though the cables ive used worked with the other older GT Samsung ,so i dug around in the bottom draw of my desk and pulled out Nokia CA-101D Micro USB Data Cable, its off an old Camera.
and volla ! away it went works a treat .Just goes to show ,persistence and stubbornness are no match for intelligent reading of suggestions . I could of solved this problem days Ago ..thanks for all of your help ! cheers Kev

nonono you can not give up ! where would we bee if our IT, with knowledge and charm, handed in her notice !!!!!!!! i suspect that the cable i used with the old Galaxy was borrowed and not returned that left me with three other cable ,and due to confusion assumed , (yes that old bug bear ) that what i was using was what i had used before... ta, i appreciate the time and effort ,thanks ,Kev ..i do have another problem ,but i will wait until the 'Cable incident', Has faded a bit from the memory ,cheers
