| Hi, I think it's time to replace my 9 year old Laptop. It has gone really well in the past, but is Windows 7 so I cannot update so is now time for a change. Have to admit it is also quite sluggish at times and is often running hot. My usage type is emails, internet (genealogy research). I have some obsolete windows programs that I use so would like to keep with that OS, no gaming. Old laptop was 11.6" screen as at that time needed smallest footprint possible, would like to go bigger if possible. Old laptop was a HP dm1-4114au, 1.65 GHz AMD dual core, 4GB ram, 500gb hard drive (300GB free). catsmeat1 - 2021-05-28 08:59:00 |
| win 10 pro is better from the point of view its usually found on better hardware, there are extra features most of which you will probably never use. The lenovo will be OK, SSD is a must these days, but the bottleneck will be that cpu. It's always a good idea to google the benchmark for the CPU the right hand side is from your old laptop, it's rubbish... The left is from the lenovo... A decent ish benchmark is maybe 4000+ nowdays, you will see little benefit from the 12GB, but I would stick with 8GB minimum king1 - 2021-05-28 09:36:00 |
| Thanks King1. Very helpful. Much appreciated. catsmeat1 - 2021-05-28 09:48:00 |
| Yeah that CPU is definitely not great at all. It sounds like you are not upgrading often at all - treat yourself! Something like the below would be a much better performer for not a lot more than your budget. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKHNB14022IBS/HP-14-dk1022 Also if you need to ask about which Windows 10 to get just get Windows 10 home. If you need to ask about Pro, then you don't need it. cube_guy - 2021-05-28 10:25:00 |
| Thanks cube-Guy. That machine looks nice. I think I need to find out a bit more about Windows Home S - from what I have read it limits be to programs from the Windows Store so that would mean it would be a no go, as I have a quite a bit of third-party software. Going through the new purchasing learning curve. Thanks for suggesting this machine the CPU looks great, and after such a good run with the last HP I like the brand. catsmeat1 - 2021-05-28 15:35:00 |
| Windows S isn't an issue, it can be disabled easily although not re-enabled king1 - 2021-05-28 15:37:00 |
| So if I need 8GB ram, Windows 10 Home and a processor CPU mark of 4000+ I am thinking perhaps this machine" catsmeat1 - 2021-05-28 15:47:00 |
| you probably should have a flick through the ex lease machines as well, usually business machines so a bit more solid and reliable, the equivalent money will get you something better than buying new... king1 - 2021-05-28 15:58:00 |
| Thanks king1, had one bad experience with ex-lease so looking for new. I know others have had good results with ex-lease, but burnt once was enough. catsmeat1 - 2021-05-28 15:59:00 |
| the problem with *new* in that price range is the build quality unfortunately, cheaper components etc irrespective of the actual specs... king1 - 2021-05-28 16:20:00 |
| That Acer from PBtech looks fine. Has a full HD screen which is nice at that price point. vtecintegra - 2021-05-28 18:52:00 |
| I held off purchasing till this weekend in the hope that the Acer came on sale. It hasn't but this HP has come on sale and has an Intel I-core 3 processors. The screen quality is not important for me, I am just confused about the CPU quality effectiveness. I note on the CPU benchmark the Intel has a better CPU Mark, but not sure if there are issues with intel? catsmeat1 - 2021-06-05 08:08:00 |

The CPU isn't important, either of those is fine for your usage. You say screen quality isn't important but I can't see how that can be the case at all - the screen is the pray way you interact with a laptop after all. My advice would be go and look at the systems side by side and buy whichever one you prefer the build/screen/keyboard quality on. vtecintegra - 2021-06-05 08:47:00 |
| Thanks tecintegra. Unfortunately PBtech is three hours drive away from me. Looks like I can just toss a coin to decide. Cheers catsmeat1 - 2021-06-05 08:52:00 |
