Just installed a new ssd drive and reinstalled windows 10. Went well for couple of days then when restarting yesterday after an update it will no longer load windows. I can’t access the f8 option, but was able to do f12 and everything checked ok. It shows dell logo, then revolving dots, then bluey screen and nothing. Any ideas please?

use your windows installation stick to boot from and try the recovery options, startup repair, system restore etc

I do have the stick, but didn’t seem to boot from it. Will try again. Has anyone else had problems with last update? The version on stick is 20H2,

First half of an update is when the computer is shutdown, does from 0 to 30%, then on start up it carries on from 30% to 100%. If I remember correctly it does go to a blue screen when updating, the revolving dots disappear and you're left with just a blue screen. If left long enough the words 'Preparing to configure windows, do not turn off your computer'(or words to that effect) eventually display.

So are you sure it's not just trying to do the second half of the update? Are you waiting hours for it to do something or waiting minutes? Are you disturbing it before it can get the second part of the update done?

If it is doing updates, it can take hours. The quick part is installing windows. The updates can take much longer.

The thing here is to watch the activity LED for the drive (hopefully it has one), if it's flickering even now and then it indicates things are happening. If it's flickering often then definitely things taking place but if it doing nothing, for like more than 15 minutes or so would indicate no intelligent life. It may be worth testing the SSD. Does it still boot from the previous SSD/ HDD?

Press the power button to start.
Allow it 10 seconds or so
Press and hold power button to shut it off -(this interrupting the startup).
Repeat this 3 times.
This should on the 3rd or 4th time force the system into the advanced startup options process. From there you can run automatic repair and many other functions.

This happened to me too on first boot after that update. C Drive would not boot despite repeated attempts. Just left it trying to boot and W10 self-repair eventually kicked in and fixed the problem.
