ipad with cellular

ipad #3 has the cellular option, last one did too but never used it, so do I just buy a sim card and install, does it automatically use up what $$ are loaded or if I'm somewhere that has wifi should I be taking it out? we are about to travel and once set up will take with me not all places we will be staying has wifi TIA

You can buy a sim card and install it into your ipad. There will be options on the ipad to turn Data on or off. You do not need to take the SIM card out of the ipad and indeed repeately doing so might damage the SIM tray, (they're generally delicate). Buy a sim card yep - then set it up with whatever kind of monthly plan for data you can afford or want. Make sure the ipad is NOT set to use data to do updates as this can chew up ALL your data very very quickly. Just use the data for accessing your emails, surfing the net, and whatever else you do online if you are not near a handy WIFI connection, (library, Mcdonalds, etc etc).

There is another option. Assuming you already have a smartphone ? You can set that up to be a 'hotspot' and you can turn that function on and off easily. That means that your ipad can connect through that phone, (it's got to be in the same room as a hotspot doesn't 'throw' very far). That way if you are already paying for one cell connection for the phone you wont have to pay for another for the ipad.
