long since iv been here i wonder if all the old regualrs are still here. so i will try and explain everything. desktop computer. dont know if its 8 or 8.1 casue when i look at the info one bit says 8.1, then in blue writing to the right it says windows 8. but anyway i shut it down each night and sometimes u get the update option come up and it says do u want to update and shut down or update and restart. so i press the update, shut down and it does it thing and turns off. all of a sudden though it says we couldnt complete the updates, undoing changes, dont turn off your computer."... and that goes on and on, and when u start it back up the same thing happens. so i tried to google a suggestion and i did this.https://trademe.tmcdn.co.-

i would probably take a full backup and then go straight for a windows 10 upgrade since 8.1 only has two years until end of support - see if that works

You missed a step in the scannow:

sfc /scannow

Also try this:

Chkdsk /r

I would back your files up, wipe the hdd/ssd, and do a fresh install of windows 10. Use the link provided at #2. If your system runs 8/8.1 it should be able to run windows 10. I wouldn't upgrade it because you're having trouble with file corruption/bloatware and an upgrade might not correct them so you could end up transferring the faults over to the new upgrade.

And so how will installing a new system help ? Might be that the disk corruption is a failing hard drive. Might be a good idea to check that first ?
Katybaty download HDSENTINAL you can get a free version and run it after download it'll tell you in seconds what kinda health the hard drive is with reference to it's physical bits.......

and where did the OP mention bloatware ?
bloatware doesn't cause file corruption it's an entirely different issue.

figure out what's wrong before continuing

no more useless OLD and TIRED 8/8.1 OS anymore. Hello New and far better windows 10 OS.

But I agree if it has a hardware fault it would pay to check that out first.

Windows 10 will struggle running in 4 GB. 16 GB minimum. 32 GB better. Really I would be installing 64 or 128 GB in new W10 machine. At least it allows for the 40 firefox windows and 100's of tabs. Note: I read lots of things.

What a lot of garbage. The average user has NO use for such a lot of ram or 100's of tabs open. Both our laptops are 8GB and that's never been insufficient.

Windows 10 must be real shithouse if 4 GB isn't enough to run the base system. What are these Microsoft software engineers doing if they are wasting so many resources?!

Don't know about that. The "average" user is not going to know that every tab on the browser means another instance of the browser running in the background. My missus is always complaining about how slow our 8Gb machine is and when I have a look she has around twenty tabs open.

So, what are the other specs of the machine. I just opened 21 tabs, (I don't normally do this), and taskmanager was showing 67% mem used, (ram), and 66% cpu. This on 8GB and an i5 6th Gen. And the laptop has an ssd. It didn't slow down at all.

20 tabs still isn't an average user though - with the notable exception of spyware, most folks with that many tabs open simply don't appreciate the concept of tabs in the first place... or that you can actually close them
