| My year 12 (next year) will be doing photography. Her byod require her to have an independent graphics card. We went to all the retailers yesterday and found nothing in my price range $700 or below. Infact cheapest was around 1k. So can I possibly buy a cheaper laptop and add a graphic card? I’ve found a couple at pbtech. jojo76 - 2020-10-26 08:48:00 |

| You definitely don't want anything with an AMD A4 processor - those are extremely slow (about half the speed of an 8 year old i5) What software is she going to run? For Photoshop a better CPU is much more important than the graphics card. vtecintegra - 2020-10-26 09:26:00 |

| Laptops don't have graphics cards, they have a chip built in. lythande1 - 2020-10-26 12:45:00 |

| #1, your school may have their own specifications for BYOD, but the page listed by Auckland University has good detailed specs for Highly recommended, recommended and minimum specs, plus a link to a dedicated page at PBTech. nzstocked - 2020-10-26 13:29:00 |
| Well done ! Good info regarding the best suggested specs for 'Highly Reccomended/Reccomended/Minimu- Except PB tech have no links for Minimum Spec. Only 'Highly Reccomended'. Edited by nice_lady at 1:39 pm, Mon 26 Oct nice_lady - 2020-10-26 13:36:00 |

| That list lost me at "Intel RTX" graphics card..... how is the average shopper to know what to purchase when the university themselves are listing hardware that doesn't even exist? cube_guy - 2020-10-26 15:54:00 |

it doesn't ? https://www.techspot.com/article/2103-amd-vs-intel-rtx-3080/ nice_lady - 2020-10-26 16:22:00 |
| No, it doesn't. An RTX card is made by Nvidia. What you have linked to is them comparing how a RTX GPU goes when using either an AMD or Intel CPU and what the performance differences are. The headline in that article is just awful. Edited by cube_guy at 4:43 pm, Mon 26 Oct cube_guy - 2020-10-26 16:29:00 |
| ah. Ok didn't actually read past the headline lol. Well maybe you should send the Uni a little note to say that for a bunch of brainboxes they seem to be doing a great job of passing along misinformation ! nice_lady - 2020-10-26 16:42:00 |
| Basically you are not going to get a good enough new laptop for photography for under a $1000. Not only do you need a dedicated graphics card you also need a reasonable processor. duncb - 2020-10-26 17:12:00 |
| Yeah any new laptop under $700 isn't going to be great at all. nice_lady - 2020-10-26 17:24:00 |
| Yeah I just bought an Asus tuf gaming laptop for every day use. Ryzen 7 8core16thread 16gb 3200mhz 512gb m.2 gtx1650 and radeon graphics and has a spare sata hdd bay. No change from $1650.00 muppet_slayer - 2020-10-26 18:56:00 |
| For my photo work I had to upgrade (desktop computer) from a 1050Ti graphics card (4Gb) to a RTX 2060 Super (8Gb). gettinggrey - 2020-10-27 09:02:00 |
| Just keep in mind, for laptops, you are stuck with what you buy, in essence, you cannot upgrade graphics or processor capabilities... this is where you do try and get the best as much as the budget allows... hogleg - 2020-11-08 13:55:00 |
| Look for a used 15" MacBook Pro for around $700. Ideally with an i7 processor. It will have plenty of grunt and being a 15" will have the the separate graphics processor. You will find most of the professional photographers will use Apple products for post production work. tony9 - 2020-11-08 16:22:00 |
| The GPU you'd get on a $700 MBP would be useless these days - even second hand that sort of money gets you diddly squat in the Apple world vtecintegra - 2020-11-08 16:29:00 |

| My second Mac is a 15" Mid 2014 MBP, 2.2ghz quad core, 16GB Ram with the Intel Iris graphics. It runs Lightroom no problem. These are still $1100+ used. sw20 - 2020-11-08 17:00:00 |
