| What is best solar charge option for mobile phone. blogzy - 2020-10-24 16:27:00 |
| That would depend on your 'use case' wouldn't it. When you're hiking or biking for a couple of hours ? (carry charger attached to backpack perhaps - some are made to do this with them). When you're sitting on the beach fishing all day (maybe the solar panel can sit on your chillybin) ? When you're out on the farm ? It might also be useful to know the phone battery capacity as that info combined with the output of any solar charger will tell you how long it's going to take to charge. 3 | Camping, no power available. 2 x one plus 6 phones. Edited by blogzy at 4:44 pm, Sat 24 Oct blogzy - 2020-10-24 16:41:00 |
| I think the question is .. are you going to be hiking with it ? If you are hiking you will need a light weight folding one (which is more likely to get damaged). A phone battery is 4.2volts X 3.35Ah = about 14 watt hours. So a 10 watt panel would charge one in 1.4hours at a 100% efficiency. More likely 2 Hours if it is sunny and the panel is facing in the right direction and 5 hours if it is overcast. Hiking ones usually come with 5v outputs for phones while solid panels are 12 volt+ which can be brought down to 5 volts with a buck converter (if they don't have a 5v output) duncb - 2020-10-24 17:32:00 |
| No hiking .we are driving to destination that has no power. We intend to be there for a while. blogzy - 2020-10-24 19:40:00 |
| So for my application what should I be looking for. blogzy - 2020-10-25 16:56:00 |
| You have lots of options depending how diy capable you are. This simplest cheap option is as follows. Jaycar are selling off some solid 5W panels for $10 -$14 ( https://www.jaycar.co.nz/12v-5w-monocrystalline-solar-panel/ duncb - 2020-10-25 17:42:00 |
| Thanks, what powerbank would you suggest ? blogzy - 2020-10-25 20:49:00 |
| Darn, Jaycar show no stock on these items, can you suggest another option. Thanks blogzy - 2020-10-25 20:56:00 |
| Jaycar do have new stock of panels but they are more expensive. A 10,000 Mah powerbank (minimum i would advise) would give a full charge for both phones and charge another one. PB tech have on special today and Dick Smith / Kogan have them for just over $20. Other alternative is to get a solar panel to charge a 12 volt battery. You could the use the USB output converter to charge the phones or even use an inverter to supply 240 volts. Obviously if you are using an inverter you will need to make sure you have power going into the battery from the panel(s) to supply whatever you are drawing from it. duncb - 2020-10-26 19:03:00 |
| Just to confirm, this item is only required when powering phone directly from solar panel. It's not required when using a power bank ? https://www.surplustronics.co.nz/products/8353-5v-usb-output blogzy - 2020-10-27 14:42:00 |
| You will need the 5 volt usb output for powering phones AND charging the power bank duncb - 2020-10-27 15:38:00 |
| A tidy solution might be an all in one unit solar charging power bank that has 2 usb outputs of 1A or 2A. Have seen some of 10,000 - 20,000 mAh capacity for $20, or lower mAh models for $15. nzstocked - 2020-10-27 16:14:00 |

Would Jaycar stock this item ? blogzy - 2020-10-27 18:07:00 |

They DO have a website. nice_lady - 2020-10-27 18:13:00 |

Yes I did see a similar item on the Jaycar website around the same $6 mark. I'm just not sure it fulfills the same function. Please excuse my lack of electronic knowledge. blogzy - 2020-10-27 19:07:00 |

I would be very very skeptical about buying something like this. There are lots of places that make false claims about the output of the solar panels and the storage of the power banks duncb - 2020-10-27 19:21:00 |
| Jaycar would not be my go to place unless they have items on special and I can see anything at a reasonable price. However they do have a simple solution for you (but too expensive for me ) https://www.jaycar.co.nz/10w-solar-mobile-charger-with-usb-o duncb - 2020-10-27 19:33:00 |
| Thanks for your help duncb and others. What do you think about this combination. https://www.surplustronics.co.nz/products/8353-5v-usb-output https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/BAPPRM1038/Promate-VOLTAG-1 Would that be a functional package ? $6.50 + $45 + $35 blogzy - 2020-10-27 21:57:00 |

| Lets forget what intrade said because a lot of it is a load of rubbish. You do not need a square metre of solar panels to charge a phone unless they complete crap. I have done all the calculations for you using equipment that has the correct specs. If you buy items that lie about the specs then obviously the calculation do not work correctly. Now if you want to charge more than two phones I can do the calculations again for you but having a 70 watt panel is complete overkill. So the question is... are you wanting to charge two phones or do more?? duncb - 2020-10-29 00:18:00 |
| 2 phones only. If I could add 1 X 5v light that would be a bonus but not imperitive. blogzy - 2020-10-29 07:10:00 |
| you should be able to charge the issue is maybe only slow. intrade - 2020-10-29 19:17:00 |

| Yes blogzy - 2020-10-29 20:58:00 |
| the reason you need a large solar cell is if sun is there its all good if no sun then its output drops like a stone in water. Edited by intrade at 7:24 pm, Fri 30 Oct intrade - 2020-10-30 19:10:00 |
| something i have not extended research as to why is you cant fit solar cells directly to a battery , them new ones , i dont quite know why but there was some reason You will have to research that otherwise you could run the charger directly making 5 volt.. from the Sun hitting cell to charger to your power bank. intrade - 2020-10-30 19:28:00 |
| I only need solar charge over the coming summer so I'll take my chances on the 20w solar panel. blogzy - 2020-10-30 20:18:00 |
| intrade wrote: Cost is probably the biggest factor why you don't often see power banks with solar chargers fitted mrfxit - 2020-11-01 10:33:00 |
| A real 20 watts panel should be great. This connected via a type of converter to 5 volts to a decent power bank should provide all the power you need during summer for your phones plus more. Pleased to see that you that you have not gone for a larger rv panel as that is really designed for charging 12V batteries. duncb - 2020-11-01 19:10:00 |
| One more thing, any recommendations on a small 5v light I could run of my power bank also. blogzy - 2020-11-01 20:38:00 |

My new Jaycar 12v 20w solar panel instructions state "a charge controller is recommended to prevent overcharging" would this be an issue with my power bank and 12v to 5v surplustronics converter setup ? Edited by blogzy at 6:24 pm, Tue 3 Nov blogzy - 2020-11-03 18:17:00 |
| The first 2 days I had rain and cloudy. No enough charge for 2 phones. Been fine for the last 4 days and have had more then enough charge from the 20w panel for 2 phones. ???? blogzy - 2020-11-14 17:00:00 |
