Where did she go?

1 | Firstly, Happy New Year!! My great-grandfather had a child out of wedlock while still married to my great-grandmother, which resulted in their divorcing. I knew the name of the mother as she was named in the divorce petition, along with the date of the child, so obtaining the birth certificate was quite easy. Now the fun part. I can't find any further record for her, including the 1911 census three years after her birth. This is the entry for her birth; Her birthdate was 23.09.1908 and her mother's first name was Annie. Where else can I look? Thank you in advance. Edited by firemansgirl at 7:04 pm, Sat 4 Jan firemansgirl - 2020-01-04 19:03:00 |
2 | She would be with her mother? Annie who? Annie Simmonds? Annie Hambledon? The girls mother may have married and had her daughter then called after the new husband? There are a few Annie Simmonds marrying in that period between 1908 and 1911. jhan - 2020-01-04 20:34:00 |
3 | (Should've mentioned that she was born in UK.) Anyway, there's heaps of Dorothy Simmonds in the UK marriage index, but there's one in the UK death index which could be a match. Died 1927, D quarter in Staines, age 19, Vol 03A, Page 4 dracu1a - 2020-01-04 21:02:00 |
4 | Do you know if Annie married your great grandad or someone else? dracu1a - 2020-01-04 21:34:00 |
5 | Sorry I wasn't clear enough. Her mother was Annie Simmonds. Hambledon is the area in Surrey, UK that she was born in. Annie did not marry my great-grandfather. I did order that death certificate too as Staines is relatively close to Hambledon, but when it arrived the parents names were wrong. I couldn't find Dorothy or Annie on the 1911 Census. firemansgirl - 2020-01-04 21:59:00 |
6 | If Annie Simmonds married, what was her married name? Edited by stock at 10:48 pm, Sat 4 Jan stock - 2020-01-04 22:48:00 |
7 | This may not be her but it came up when I searched death registrations for Dorothy Annies who were born 23 Sept 1908. Name: Dorothy Annie Bowden It's possible Dorothy's mother married and Dorothy took on her stepfather's surname, using that when she herself married. Do you have a date or year of birth for the mother (Annie)? Just wondering if we can find Annie in the 1939 register to see if she is with a new husband. 8 | Good morning. I'm sorry I don't know any other information about Annie. Only that she was named in the divorce petition. I guess I should apply for the death certificate of Dorothy Annie Bowden to find out more. Thank you. firemansgirl - 2020-01-05 12:09:00 |

Actually, it may not be her. I have just looked on free BMD and there was a Dorothy Annie Bowden born in Devon in the same quarter as the birthdate above (23/9/1908) I'n guessing the death is for the same one and not mine. firemansgirl - 2020-01-05 12:17:00 |

Thank you. I found this Dorothy in the 1911 Census so am sure it's not my missing one. firemansgirl - 2020-01-05 12:34:00 |
12 | It will be very time consuming but here's what I would do. It's basically trying to find her through a process of elimination. If you can access the 1939 register, start making a list of every female whose date of birth is 23 Sept 1908. Start off with the Dorothys, then move on to all females. For those on your list who are married, find their marriage registration on FreeBDM to see what their maiden name was. In conjunction with this, make a list of all the Ann, Anne or Annie Simmonds marriages that took place after Sept 1908 and what the husband's surname was. If the daughter Dorothy took on her stepfather's surname then that's what she may have been recorded under when she herself married. Then work through each name on your list(s) and cross off names that couldn't be Dorothy. ed65 - 2020-01-05 16:39:00 |

Thank you so much for this. It will be time consuming but it's SO valuable. firemansgirl - 2020-01-05 18:37:00 |
14 | There is a family tree at Ancestry for Dorothy Annie Simmonds who was issue cited in the 1909 divorce of the reputed father. It claims the mother Annie (Mrs Hampton) nee Simmonds died 26 OCT 1953 West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. stock - 2020-01-05 21:24:00 |

20 | In Dorothy Annie's birth entry the field in which the mother's maiden surname is stated is left blank. It usually indicates that the mother was not married. Perhaps Annie and Charles had split up by then. SIMMONDS, DOROTHY ANNIE - h28skipper - 2020-01-06 14:59:00 |
