#Post

Not a recipe question but how do I do this ,found a very nice vintage Christmas tree shape cake tin /tray of six in a second hand shop but has lots of rust in it. It looks quite old am wondering how do I efficiently remove this dark brown rust. Also anyone can suggest where I can buy Christmas tree shape cake tins .Thanks

I just line my rusty tins with lots of paper, sorry no help on your question but it might give you an alternative.

These guys have tree shapes.
I like this one, but check out their 'Holiday' baking section too.
You may find one in NZ, but not too late to get from USA.

Use a very fine wet and dry emery paper with water

Id give the tin a good scrub with a plastic pot scrub get the bits off, rub some oil on the rusty bits and dry it in a slow oven, wipe it again with a paper towel when cool to see if any more rust comes off.

And explain why sugary water works.
Really you'd need to sand it.

What are the tins made of?
There was a very good hint on using tin foil to clean particular types of pots and pans
Tried it and great result
Good luck

It is not just sugary water. Coke has the ph level of 2.525 which makes it about 10,000 - 100,000 times more acidic than water. Or similar to pure lemon juice.

If sugar wasn't added to it, it would be undrinkable.

Note: Battery acid has a ph of 1 so coke is not that far ahead in terms of acidity. Its ability to strip teeth of enamel is amazing.

I would line it with foil.

Me too. I would just turn the tin upside down, place foil all over then remove the foil and place inside the tin.

We have had a tooth soaking in coke for two years, all the coke did was discolour the tooth

It isn't the sugar that does the job, it is the acids. Mechanics have been using it for years to remove rust and loosen nuts and bolts. And a can of coke, emptied into the washing machine before you wash new denim really does soften it.
OP, I often buy rusty, unusual cake tins from op-shops. Firstly, you have to give it a good wash, then scour it with fine steel wool if it isn't too bad, or a stainless steel scouring pad THEN fine steel wool if it is flakey. Wash again and dry in a warm oven, before reseasoning the metal by wiping it out with an oily cloth or paper towel and baking it in the oven at about 180 degrees C.. Repeat the oil application and baking a couple of times and you'll be good to go.
i have a Dremel tool, so sometimes I use that to clean out tight corners. I don't use coke because I rarely buy it.

In an effort to curb my coke drinking when I was a teenager my father put a rusty bolt in a saucer of coke so I could see how corrosive it was.
His experiment successfully removed the rust but didn’t stop me drinking the crap by the litre. ????
Soak it in coke, rust removal is the only good thing about coke...
