Trying to find the father of my ggrandfather

| My illegitimate ggrandfather, James Moir born Aberdeen, Scotland in May 1871 claimed that his father's name was James MOIR, a military gent. As his mother's name was quite different (and no Moirs exist anywhere else in the tree) I am assuming that there is some truth to this which would explain why he was given the name James Moir. Unfortunately I cannot find a census record for his mother or maternal grandmother in 1871 but assume that they would be together just seven weeks prior to his birth in Aberdeen. He was born at 28 Bread St, St Nicholas. So I am looking for any information about any James Moir who was in the military in or around Aberdeen in late 1870. Any help with this would be much appreciated. deano - 2019-06-18 15:33:00 |
| Would not assume that they were together at any time, but once. More likely if they had married later but not common. amasser - 2019-06-18 17:22:00 |

| https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ is the source of Scottish births marriage & death records. I don't have any credits to view the details. But if it is your man, there may be something useful there. stock - 2019-06-18 21:02:00 |

A family tree at Ancestry claims the mother of James Stewart Moir who died in NZ in 1960 was Jane Donald. There is this 1871 possibility at 28 Broad Street (not Bread Street) Aberdeen: Jane Donald 19 and Margaret Donald 52 Edited by stock at 9:32 pm, Tue 18 Jun stock - 2019-06-18 21:32:00 |

| Hi Thanks for that. Yes his mother was Jane Donald. Well, well well. The missing census record for Jane and her mother. Freecen is not a site I usually use so I guess I've learned a lesson here. Thanks so much Stock for all your help. The pointer to James Moir, soldier is definitely worth pursuing if I can. Wonderful thanks deano - 2019-06-18 22:19:00 |
| Interestingly Jane Donald married Alexander Cunningham in 1878. He was also a soldier residing at Castlehill in the 93 Highlanders in 1871. Am I a bit closer to my man? No luck with tracing him so far Edited by deano at 1:17 am, Wed 19 Jun deano - 2019-06-19 01:17:00 |
| Yes I have my James Moir's birth record which states that he is the illegitimate son of Jane Donald. He names his father as James Moir on his first marriage record and in a newspaper article in regards to his second marriage Edited by deano at 1:22 am, Wed 19 Jun deano - 2019-06-19 01:21:00 |
| I have found this man's family although there is no record for James after 1871. There are other family members to pursue however with several trees online. Here's hoping!! deano - 2019-06-19 15:57:00 |

| what do you mean by that last comment Deano? alinz - 2019-06-25 21:54:00 |
| Sorry! The way he embellished his father's name. On his birth record he is illegitimate and no father named, On his first marriage it says James Moir, military gent deceased, then two middle names are added for the newspaper item about his second marriage and James Stewart Cunningham Moir certainly sounds rather grand. At the time of his first marriage his mother is named as Jane Moir, but she was never married to his father so I have even wondered if she was present at the marriage. By then she was Mrs Cunningham. The Cunningham comes from his mother's marriage after his birth and the Stewart is from a middle name he adopted after his birth. From what I've learnt of the man since doing genealogy is that he may have presented himself as something more than he actually was and James Stewart Cunningham Moir does sound rather grand...and all a load of bollocks Edited by deano at 6:12 pm, Wed 26 Jun deano - 2019-06-26 18:10:00 |
