What about putting it up on the photo dating board on Rootschat. Some dress & costume experts there. They will want to know what if anything is on the back.

Do you know what country?

Was it taken in New Zealand? If so, more likely to be later than 1860 as photography probably wasn't common previously. Guess would be 1860-80 but take it to your museum as they should be able to identify the era.

I have a similar photograph of my Gt Grandparents and family around 1903. My grandfather was born in 1902 and in the photo wears a very similar sailor suit to the little boy standing on the chair. He also sports the long curled hair.

Apologies in advance if that's not a little boy!

I don't see any sailor suits in the photo.

I would go a bit earlier, 1860s or 1870s.

This might give you a few hints based on the woman's clothes and hair.

Edwardian? or 1890s to 1910 looking at the clothing and reminding me of some of my family photos.

Yes, everyone wore skirts and "breeching" when boys went into some form of trousers was something that happened later, right up to early last century.

Great thread, I have a similar photo of some unidentified rellies that I am trying to date. I'm pretty sure it is my gt gt gt's on ym granddad's side but don't have that pinned down yet.
Awesome link rednicnz, I have saved it and will be sure to use it again.

I would put my two cents in at around 1900. Seen similar in my collection.
