Transporting Beer in the late 1800s?

How would they transport beer in say the 1880s? The question came up when we were visiting the Wade (now Silverdale) about 40 km or so from Auckland. It can't have been by horse and cart as the roads were bad? Think of what happens if you shake a bottle of beer. Shipping would have been too costly.

Not a problem due to beer being flat back then, carbonation was mostly later on as i understand it.

Quote one chap- I went to a late 1800's themed brewery a few weeks back. They had a keg of each of their offerings "completely flat and room temperature, as it was served at the time". Most people chose the refrigerated and carbonated version.

- Carbonating booze is the result of conditioning, which is sealing the liquid into an airtight container with enough yeast and sugar to do the job. The yeast eats the sugar and makes CO2, the gas has no where to go and builds up pressure. Left in this state, the liquid carbonates.

So, you need an air tight container, at the very least. The very first beers would have been dead flat and room temperature. Even after it was possible to carbonate beer, it wasn't always served like that.

And of course it travelled in kegs and barrels, which had a good deal more head room, rather than bottles.

Mainly in wooden barrels by rail to a rail head then horse and cart to where needed.

I wonder why you suggest that shipping would have been too costly as there was regular shipping between Auckland and the Wade around that time.
There is an interesting history of the Wade here:
