Any kind person have access to McGuire 1848 -1880'

A bit stuck on Patrick McGuire (sometimes Maguire) abt 1795-1875 (?) and his wife Hanorah/Honorah/Norah Dewling/Dowling/Dowley abt 1814- 20/01/1880 or several combinations of those names.

They arrived in NZ on the ship Ann in 1948 with Patrick being one of the 94th foot regiment of The Fencibles. Passenger list has Patrick and Hanorah travelling with 4 children, one of whom was my gt gt gm Sarah born abt 1845 in Ireland. Unable to locate the names of the other 3 children.

It seems fairly sure that Mary Ann McGuire born 1852 in Otahuhu to a Patrick and Norah McGuire was their child.

The family was posted to the Otahuhu Garrison. I think it is probable that he was the Patrick McGuire who in the electoral roll years 1868-1869 was listed as residing ‘Seven acres near Otahuhu, No 14 of small lots.”

Sarah ended up in Te Awamutu, the wife of John Potter. Her mother Hanorah died at their home.

Before I go and camp out at the Otahuhu Library for a few days looking for God knows what can someone suggest a way to find the names of the three other children of Patrick and Hanorah who arrived on the Ann in 1848. There was a census in 1851.

Thanks for reading this, extra thanks if you can help.

Does Otahuhu library have a "Genie" section - I thought only Manukau? Other suggestion would be to ring the Gene society in Panmure - maybe they could direct you. If the father was a fencible soldier they may have more records as most the fencibles were based in Howick I understand. Capricorngirl

Cheers for those ideas. Might go see what Otahuhu Library have in their local history section first, a name or two attached to school records will help.
Patrick was definitely an Otahuhu based Fencible.

You could possibly look for McGuire marriages or obituaries in Papers Past to see if they link up with the parents.

Also a possibility

Thanks for that article nbrob. I had read a shorter version but this one names a couple of the deceased's sisters which gives me a few more clues to work on.
This one might be a grandchild of Patrick and Hanorah as I know she died in 1880.

My husband has a Fencible in his family tree. I found the book on the Royal NZ Fencibles Births, Intentions to Marry, Death Notices very helpful in finding the names of children not named on the passenger list. Hamilton Public Library has a copy of this as well as other resources on the Fencibles.

I also found the Catholic Diocese of Auckland very helpful for NZ based records

You may have already seen this: http://pearlspad.net.nz/ShipsToAuckland.htm
(Many of the Passengers of the Ann were suffering from influenza.
Twelve children died, and four were born on board.)
" It is not generally known that the Bridge over the salt water creek at Penrose
Otahuhu Road, known as 'Ann's Bridge' was built by the male passengers of the 'Ann', hence its name."

Thanks deano , will try those tips.

Thanks mkr_ahearn. Our lot are on the pearls pad link, it's a shame that the children were not named on the passenger list, it would have saved so much time. I will get there !!!
