Was invited out for a smorgasbord lunch recently (not my favorite way to dine) Two of the men at the table were disgusting glutton's. Two plates of food each, before the other 4 at the table had finished one plate. All blended together until the angle or repose off the food would roll off the plate, if they piled anymore on. Then both up for 2 laden plates of desert each.

it's kind of what you expect from a smorgasboard or an all you can eat restaurant.

A real scandinavian smorgasboard is supposed to be revisited. Though you are not supposed to pile your plate up, you are supposed to try everything you find tempting, starting with fish dishes, and working your way through cold dishes, hot dishes, pastries and desserts and finish up with fruit and cheese. You are also expected to change your plate often. So if you eat with a group, there will always be people coming and going.

Hungry men, maybe they hadn't eaten out for a long time, so made the most of it. Hope you enjoyed yours, but I wonder.

Apparently most Smorgasbords in the USA have either closed or changed to a la carte. Main problem was one particular religious group that is spread throughout the USA has ruined Smorgasbords by sliding food in to Doggy Bags, then returning for more.
Was working in the USA a few years ago and one evening I observed a family (very obvious that they were from the same following) fill a bag beneath the table with at least a dozen full Pizzas at an all you can eat Pizza Restaurant. It looked as though this was their normal modus operandi.

Still plenty of buffets in Vegas! I haven't heard the word Smorgasbord for a long time, I think even in New Zealand they are known as buffets.
We were in Aussie last week and our hotel had a very reasonably priced breakfast buffet - $15 if you paid the night before or $20 for a walk in. One morning we observed a couple next to us who had four plates each of cooked breakfast and were still going when we left. We wondered how well they would feel being stuffed with so much food.

we were talking about these the other day but at weddings, when you were the last table to go up to get lunch, there was nothing left.
I remember years ago when I helped in catering I couldn't believe my eyes the amount of dessert the ladies put on their plates, we only used to put out small plates so would only take a small amount, but no they would pile the food on
