teaching a lefthander to knit

Should I try and teach her the ordinary way with yarn in right hand or the german way with yarn in left hand? If I go the german way will she be able to read ordinary knitting patterns or will she have to go for german ones.

The knitting patterns do not affect how you knit . I am German and still use my way of knitting, wool right hand, its also quicker.. we wind the left needle around the yarn, English wind the yarn around the needle

I'm left handed and my Mum was trying to teach me (40 years ago) to knit right handed via a mirror. It didn't work. I found sitting next to her and copying what she was doing the best.

If you think about it... she's going to need your help down the track when she loses a stitch etc so imagine if you teach her differently to how you knit. Are you going to then be able to help her fix problems or are you going to be cursing it and wishing you had taught her how you are used to doing it?

ETA: the only difference I do is my right hand does not have the coordination to be able to hold the right needle and wind the wool around it at the same time. I put the right needle under my arm so the hand only needs to wind the wool.

I only learnt to knit when I was an adult by sitting opposite my friend and copying her.
It was really easy for me to learn that way and I can follow knitting patterns without problems,

Off topic but I’ve always wanted a left handed sewing machine, I can’t work the normal ones ????

This ^^^ I'm left handed too and knit right handed, crochet, sew etc with my left. I have my own unique style of knitting lol.

I'm left handed and my mother taught me to knit right handed. It makes patterns easier to follow. I crochet left handed. I learned by sitting opposite my grandmother and copying what she did. I sew left handed, and when I was a Fabric Technology teacher found it really good to help left handed students who would say they couldn't do something because they were left handed. My sewing machine is fine, but I always find it difficult threading my overlocker left handed!!

Learnt to knit right handed without a problem but crochet and tatting I simply sat opposite and it was easy. Don’t have a problem with sewing machine except my pins are always wrong way round. Now nearly 80 I’ve been a crafter and seamstress since primary school.

Funny - my nana learnt to knit from a left hander so although she was right handed she knitted and tied bows left handed. I learnt to knit by sitting opposite her so I knit right handed but I tie bows left handed because she sat behind me to teach me to tie bows in my shoe laces

Get them to watch you in a mirror. This is how I learned to crochet from my lefty mother in law. I'm right handed

I'm left handed but my grandmother taught me right handed when I was around 7 years old. I'm from the generation where there was nothing 'left handed' for us lefties so we had to adapt in a right handed world. I would suggest you let her watch and copy you and workout what is more comfortable for her.
