Ancestry.com or My heritage?

#Post
1

greetings, which site is the best to test with . It seems My heritage is slightly more specific but Ancestry has the bigger database.
My thoughts were to test with my heritage and then link to Ancestrys database for connections...is that a good process or is it better to go the other way.
Ancestry and then upload to other sites.
Your thoughts appreciated

Hi,

Ancestry doesn’t allow uploads, while My Heritage does. The My Heritage database is the smallest of all the major companies too. I guess it depends on how ‘hard’ you’re going to be investigating. You’d be better testing at Ancestry, 23&Me or FtDna and uploading to GedMatch/FtDna/MyHeritage if you’re serious about the connections. I uploaded to MyHeritage before they were in the testing games themselves, and personally I didn’t find them useful at all and the ethnicity estimates were way off; though things might have gotten better now, this was a couple of years ago now.

If it’s just a bit of fun, then MyHeritage is probably ok. I’ve tested at FtDna and Ancestry and while some of my matches have also tested in both places, the Ancestry test has gotten me further on than FtDna did. I had uploaded to GedMatch too, but killed all my kits there, deciding now if I want to upload my kit again now that they’ve been sold.

The useful part is the matches. Ancestry has the biggest database so start there! And how successful you are is dependent on who else has tested and how much tree has been done!

I tested with ancestry then took it to MH. I got a lot of North American hits with ancestry, but more New Zealand/Australian ones with MH. I am into genealogy and much prefer ancestry as a website. If it is only DNA it is probably cheaper with MH.

I went with Ancestry, then loaded to myheritage ftdna hor free. Cannot go from my heritage to ancestry so would have to do two tests. With ancestry it is more expensive but you get three companies for the price of one test.

I rate them as equal, as Ancestry has bigger database but is also more restrictive of what you can do. Myheritage shows you the parts of the chromosome you match on which can be very useful and also you can view people's trees without paying subscription money. I've got heaps of very helpful and unique matches on MyHeritage that are not on Ancestry.

Highly recommend getting into both Ancestry and MyHeritage. So that's basically testing with Ancestry and downloading your dna file and uploading it to MyHeritage and paying $39 one off fee (unless its changed since I looked last) to get access to the database.

Thanks for all the advice. Was looking for the best and most cost effective way to access both data bases , was going to go my heritage first due to the cheaper test....glad i asked as that would have been a mistake cheers

I have bought kits on both sites for my use and my family's. I even gave one to my ex husband and father of our son. He was adopted too. Sometimes you can open a can of worms too. I can since learnt that my ex husband may have been the product of incest. How else did he have 84 percent English ethnicity; this was brought to my attention from another user on those sites digging into their family history and percentages of where we come from.

The other thing that blew me away is learning that I am 46 % Irish, Welsh or Scotts. Celtic that is. Which is funny. in tours all through Europe I went to the Irish Bars. And then I am 44% Viking. Hello blonde hair and white skin , no surprise there. But then there is the 9.5 % Greek!. And my son thinks that he is Spartican or what ever that is. So where does the Greek thing come from? Just re reading my post. This is my heritage.

Don't believe what someone who has no relation to your husband said as it could be way out of line and very upsetting to your husband if he found what was being said, it takes alot to learn how to connect DNA matches and what the cm's mean, I am still learning
