Any advice regarding small Norfolk (UK) villages?

When you get back to the late 1700's, early 1800's, parish records or Bishop's transcripts, often the records are quite sparse - and some of the writing almost indecipherable.

Is it normal to come to a grinding halt? Whereas some areas may have useful detail, (birthplace) others do not.

If you need help and would like to post names and places we may be able to help as we all have various resources

Yes it can be normal to come to a grinding halt! Norfolk is quite well transcribed on FreeReg - https://www.freereg.org.uk/ so that's another pair of eyes on things! I often browse through the records because I get used to being able to see my families' names in the records.

My other problem is that Ancestry (who have the records in addition to FamilySearch) doesn't recognize the village my family came from as a place name. Putting it in Keyword helps but you do wonder if you're missing something!

Thanks.

Although I have a generation or two earlier, and from later to date, I'm stuck for an accurate birth date or details of a John Green, born about 1811 in Beighton, Norfolk. He was later, publican of the Clough Fleet Tavern in Kings Lynn.

Ironically, he married a lady whose illegitimate daughter's descendants, came to Thames and later Auckland!

Norfolk named villages so far also include Hassingham (father), Hockwold (son), Buckenham etc.

I do intend to briefly visit these villages later this year, but I doubt I'll be able to add anything of real value from the visit, other than maybe photographs of a few village signs.

What was John's father's name?

Father was also John Green - born in Hassingham 1788. Seems to have been several generations of John Greens, but the oldest is a Jonathan Green, born before 1773 as far as I can gather and he may even have been a church warden.

I accept that maybe a home birth could mean that there were births outside of a particular parish or maybe in a wife's parish. I have no idea when all births had to be recorded and when the census system started. (I'm new to all of this! A cousin has done much of the initial groundwork.)

Having had a quick browse - think he may have been illegitimate. Left page second from the bottom:

16598

It means it would have been indexed under his mother's name.

Thanks fur that. Looks as though the wedding was probably a month or two after the birth! Birthdate appears to have been Feb 25th (mine is 26th...) wedding April 12th.
