Good news. Many thanks for posting the link.

When I first learnt that I had Irish ancestors I hoped that I would find a Pat Murphy among them, who was pretty much the leading character in every Irish joke that did the rounds at that time.

Not only did I find one, but I also have Pat's best mate, Pat Mathews. The one in the jokes always had two t's in his surname, but we all know that spelling wasn't all that important in the olden days.

Patrick Mathews, b. Abt 1761; m. Mary Cunningham (1755-1850); d. 20 Jun 1846; bur. 22 Jun 1846, Dromin, County Louth.

Patrick Murphy married Mary Emily Hampton. No details known about them, except daughter:
Mary Jane Emily Murphy, born 25 Dec 1825, Ardee, County Louth, Ireland; married 22 Sep 1841, Richard Mathews (1815-1895) at Dundalk, Ireland; died 24 Jul 1877 at Opaki, Wairarapa, NZ; buried 27 Jul 1877 at Masterton, NZ.

Maybe I'll be able to find out more now.
