| Hi. I have inherited a large bunch of coins, all ages, including the odd late 1800s ones. What would be the best way of selling them? brock365 - 2012-08-03 23:31:00 |
| The best bet is to group them by country in quantities of five to ten. Take very good pix. Do you have a camera, and are you decent at taking photos? The easy way with a good camera is to put it on Auto. If you are more motivated, look for a flower icon that is a setting called Macro. This is specifically for the purpose of taking close-up photos. This process is easier with a tripod, though you can stabilise the camera yourself by holding the camera with both hands and placing your elbows on a flat surface above the coins. It's also better to turn off the flash and shoot with natural sunlight. Cameras that cost more than $100 or so (and maybe some that are less) have a remarkable number of options for taking good pix, but the main point is that good pix of both sides of your coins generally = better returns. Good pix reveal the quality of coins, whether that quality be good or bad. echoriath - 2012-08-03 23:47:00 |

| I think chris was our Mojo. We'll have to persevere in his absence. Maybe we could get the ball rolling with some interesting photos: http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/86/227751686_full.jp If you look just to the bottom side of the "I" and above the "T" in "LIBERTY", I think you'll see outlines of where there was oil in the die. There is also toning that roughly outlines the area where the oil was. I'm not sure if the two are related. echoriath - 2012-08-10 19:10:00 |
| As we are showing our fault coins ,how about this one. lester36 - 2012-08-10 19:52:00 |
| I have a similar thing in a late 19th century US quarter. An expert I consulted insisted it was damaged after the fact, but I disagree since the problem runs not just across the coins, but onto the edge as well. I still regard it as an error. I agree that low mintage coins with errors should get a good bump up in value, though the Red Book suggest otherwise. I've not done any research one way or the other to see how it actually plays out. My 1909-S VDB cent has a sizable lamination flaw across the back. It was the first lamination flaw I'd seen, so at first I thought it was just damaged. echoriath - 2012-08-10 20:01:00 |
